turbo

dude that's a very open ended question, there are literally thousands of turbos out there. The 2H is really not suited to a "big" turbo because it does not rev very high and can't handle high boost (about 9psi max without intercooling, maybe 13 with intercooling). If you fit a big turbo, you'll find that you get a lot of lag off idle, and by the time you've got the turbo on song, you're all out of revs and need to shift up a gear. If your current turbo can push 8 - 9 psi without struggling, all the way to 3500 rpm, then stick with it. the best way to get the best performace out of it is by opening out the exhaust to be as free-flowing as possible, and by adding an intercooler.
If you want to get a good idea of an "ideal" turbo size, there's two numbers you should consider. First think about your target power - say a 2H is 75kW stock, so at 10psi it could potentially make about 120kW (this is a bit on the optimistic side. Then think about the gas flow required to develop that amount of power - the 2H is about 4 litre, and makes peak power at about 3000rpm, so that 12000 "rpm - litres". so you're looking for a turbo off an engine that makes around 110 - 130kW, and churns through about 12000 rpm-litres at peak power - so maybe something off a bigger 4 cylinder or smaller V6 motor - as an example, a 2.4 litre motor with peak power at 5000rpm is 12000 rpm-litres and would be in a similar power ballpark to what you're looking for - maybe on the higher end around 130kW. It's not going to be a big turbo. Then rign wreckers and importers and find out what they've got on the shelf - if you can find something with a ball bearing spindle and/or ceramic turbine, they are awesome, they have a lot less inertia than an iron turbine and much less friction so they spool up very quickly.
hope that all helps a bit.

it's a steel turbine, with plane bearings. not real sophisticated as turbos go but it's very very reliable - if not abused, the CT26 on those motors can outlast the engine (400,000km++)wokket wrote:Newbie Q (and slightly off topic, Admins feel free to move this if it's a problem), is the stock turbo on the 1HD-T's etc an iron turbine, or a snazzy lightweight model??
