MQ 351 Engine Conversion
MQ 351 Engine Conversion
Hi,
new to this forum but am having trouble finding out some important information about an engine conversion.
At the moment I have a 1982 MQ Patrol 4 speed with the L28 engine and I also have a 351 Cleveland out of a 1973 Ford. Does anybody know if there there is a legal problem in having a 1973 engine put into a 1982 car. I have the bellhousing adapter and sundries for the conversion but don't wish to start in case after all the work, the engineer's certificate is knocked back.
Thanks if anybody can answer this for me.

There would be concerns about the emissions. How much they worry about this with 20 odd year old cars now I dont know.
Generally the easy solution is to run on LPG, other than that you'd need to speak to an engineer.
You might also find it much harder now to get a 351 swap approved if it's a SWB (whcih it sounds like due to the model).

Thanks for your reply (by the way I am in Brisbane if that helps at all).
I spoke to someone a while ago and they said I could put anything up to a 351 in the swb. I am hoping to one day put it on gas but want to run it for a while and see how it goes on petrol before I go and spend the bucks on a gas conversion.
Does anybody know or can someone give me a definite answer to the question of the 1973 351 into the1982 SWB and running it on petrol.
Thanks.

conversion
when a friend and i took his cruiser to get engineered the engineer first told us it had to have all the pollution control on it but then he looked up the adr's and found because it was on duel fuel it didn't need it (on the grounds that it was converted to gas for cheaper running so it would mainly be running on gas).
see ya mav
I'd say there would be some emmission problems if you wanted to run it on petrol i.e. as it came out of the original car, XA i'm guessing? Reason being that on the XC they put a lot of extra pollution gear iirc that would have been about '76, therefore you'd probably need to run straight gas to be legal in an '82 car.
I wouldn't let that put you off though, just keep an eye open for some gas research carbs, get electronic ignition/regraphed dizzy and take advantage of cheap fuel, plenty of power and no fuel starvation at angles

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots
God of Magnificant Ideas!
I wont "say" a thing except .........
You WILL have to run sole LPG for the conversion, the ONLY way around that is you fit a motor that is either the same age as the vehicle or younger than the vehicle...... no ifs or buts about it !
Even pre-emmision vehicles fall under this law if another motor not of the manafacturers specifications is fitted.
Which motor are you actually fitting ??????

And why would anyone ever fit a phuckin phord is beyond me
