I've done a bit of a search but didn't find much on this topic. What advantages will i get out of a conversion like this? I know it will lower the gearing but does it affect both high and low range or just low? running slightly bigger tyres and i want some better gearing for the steep/rocky stuff.
cheers

1.0L maruti transfer into 1.3 WT
Re: 1.0L maruti transfer into 1.3 WT
the sierra 1.0 t case is around 12% lower in high and low ratio...I assume maruti be the same.dank wrote:I've done a bit of a search but didn't find much on this topic. It's noticable, but might not really be worth the effort. I have done this with a coiler, but due to the very tall gearing in a coil transfer, it made heaps of difference, (gained a whole gear below the old 1st low) but the owner still ended up with a 4:1 rockhopper and runs 31's.
I think that if one was the right price it might be worth a play with, but for the limited gain, if you had to buy a case and possibly rebuild it, it might be worth hanging out for a rockhopper, it will be better bang for the buck. (sorry for the bad pun for those of you who have busted them)
If you think about it, instead of say a minimum crawl speed of, say 1000rpm, you will be doing the same speed at 1120 rpm. not enough to climb somthing that you couldn't climb before.
sure, there's 480 rpm in it @ 4000 rpm, but by the time you are at that speed, the gearing difference will be insignificant because the car is making plenty of power anyway.
The 12% drop in high is helpful on the road though up to about a 30" tyre.

thanks for the info guys. I guess I really only want to do this once rather than screw around heaps....The car is a weekender that i don't want to spend a lot of money on but having the rockhoppers or maybe calmini gears might be the overall solution rather than a case...
The maruti transfer is going for $270 in good condition. is that an ok price?
I'm running 30s at the moment and am totally happy with the clearance, off road and the on road drivablility isn't that bad either so i might leave it for while and see how i go...
