Tallest Diffs for FJ60

Post by beatle_bayly »

Need advice on where to obtain diff centres for the 60. Must be taller than 3.7:1, so 3.54:1 ?

Had one quote for a guy to build my diffs.........$1200 per diff ! Sounds a bit high :?

The tallest is 3.7:1 unfortunately. The 6.2 is liking the lower rpm better? Try Marks4WD's 0.92/2.82 gears. At least the high range gives you 8% overdrive, as if you have a 3.40 diff ratio. Or try taller tyres.

Are you chasing taller diff ratios cos of the engine / hwy rpms?

Curious bout what size tyres you're running. I'm running 285/75x16's (33's) and dont have a problem with excessive rpm. Also ran 265/75x16's (32's) with the 6.2 the tacho was only slightly higher.
Cant remember where the tacho sits at 100kph at the mo. Can go for a spin find out for ya if you're interested.

Yeah, I want to drop the revs to 2000 @ 100-110kph. I think my speedo is actually reading slow, but B4 I did the conversion I was running indicated 2400 @ 100KPH. I haven't been able to get the tach working since the conversion.

I have 235/85-R16s on the stock G-pack 16" chromies and I'm not sold on bigger tyres (clearance, availabilty, heat resisance, speed).

No speed limits up here so I can legally sit on 120 all day, and I think this would be the sane limit in a 60 anyway :)

I'd like to be able to tow at 100 in 4th and get a bit better milage in top. I'm not into serious 4WDing but the 60 is just so damned versatile I can't justify selling it.

My other option is a T700........which is looking better all the time !

the 235's are approx the same overall diameter as 285's so different tyres wont make any difference....unless you go for something huge like 34 or 35's. Hardly viable in your area. I had enough trouble finding a 33 anywhere between Darwin & Alice. :?

Changing your t/case gears might be the cheaper and easier option.

and yeah, your speedo will read approx 5-10 kph slower at 100 with 235 / 285's. ;)

I think the speedo error is in the speedo itself (needle is bouncing slightly). The 235s were factory fit so the speedo should have been calibrated to them (within 10%). Then again, I doubt Toyota bothered with different speedo cogs between the split rim barn-door model and the G-pack split tailgate model with 235s.

I guess if the speedo reads slow by 10% then:

1. I'm going faster than I thought. This is likely because with the cruise control selected, I seem to creep up on everyone in a speed limit area.

2. I'm covering 10% more KMs than I thought, and

3. I'm getting 10% better economy than I thought :D

Jeff from Jack Macnamara diffs in Victoria should have new 3.54 gear sets for a 60 series cruiser on the shelf.

AFAIK the only Cruiser to that came standard with 235's was the RV 100 series. The early 60's had 205x16's, 7.50x16's or 31x10.5's.

Ah Ha ! That makes sense SIXTY. I'd simply assumed that the 6JX16 rim took the 235 standard but my handbook says 205s were standard. You learn sumfin' every day :D

RUFF: I'm calling McNamara's tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder.
