All,
my FJ60 has a load of backlash in the drivetrain, which seems par for course. Every now and then the driveline seems to act as though it's made of rubber and it sorta gets the kangaroos. Its unusual in that it feels more like flex than slop, if that makes sense. There's no noise of gears coming in and out of contact which is what I normally associate with backlash. It's more like surge-surge-surge-surge than bounce-bounce-bounce.
I first suspected it was the extra torque of the 6.2 twisting the rubber mounts, but they're all good and it also occasinally happens at highway speeds.
A mate reckons he's spent ages chasing this in a HJ75 and he swapped diffs, propshafts, engine and tranny mounts to no avail.
In the end he fixed it by WELDING the transfer case' constant drive gear to the unused PTO gear.
He said to pop the cover off the Tx case, clean the oil off the cogs, put reverse pressure on the propshaft and just weld away. He said something about it placing the torque load on a longer section of the spline, eliminating the twist in the shaft.
Has anyone tried this ????????????? Does anyone recommend it ?????????????
