does anyone know what is involved in rebuilding a mitsubishi td04 turbo, or any idea on cost to get it done?

is this the same or simiar turbo that is on a cordia? if so I have done a couple. basically it's a matter of pull it apart, clean it all, check bearing clearances, if bearings ok, put it back together. (much like any turbo really)

if bearings bad, take the bearings (thrust and journal) and the turbine/shaft to a turbo shop, ask for new bearings, wait for them to stop swearing at you for pulling it apart, pay them for new bearings, go home and put it all together. from memory the mitsus the only special tools you need are 12 point sockets for the impeller nut, and robust snap ring pliers.

how do you deicide if bearings bad? the journal clearance should allow the impeller and turbine to move perpendicular to the axis less than 50% of the clearance between the turbine/impeller and the respective housing. if there's a lot of crud in there you may need to pull it down, clean it up, and out it together to test. for axial/thrust bearing, there should be less than (I'm guessing, it's what I would use if I was deciding to replace the bearing or not) about 2 - 4 thou' (.05 - .10mm) axial play. easy to check with a dial gauge. if you don't have a dial gauge then basically use common sense - if you can feel a lot of slop in the thrust bearing obviously it's bad)

also while you have it apart you'll have to check for any damage to impeller and turbine blades, cracks in the housings (especially the exhaust/turbine housing, I think they crack between the wastegate orifice and the turbine outlet which usually isn't a big problem unless it all starts falling apart. if the turbine or impeller are damaged, junk it. use it for a decorative bookend or toilet roll holder.

if all that sounds too hard I can do it for cheap* but if it needs parts you do the running around to chase them up.


*cheap = $100 - $200 depending on how mucky it is and how difficult it is to get apart ie if the bearing is siezed or if it's full of coke then it will need extra lurve.
