normal gq temp?

Post by toy77 »

G'day all,

i have just done the head on my carby tb42.

at the same time i had radiator flushed and pressure tested. have replaced all belts.

i have also fitted AU thermo fans and a new thermostat. fans are controlled with a thermo switch.

what i am asking i spose is where do these normally run on the temp guage?

mine runs almost dead on halfway now. it used to run down around 1/4.

Cheers

anywhere between bottom line and top line is normal.

My TD42 runs normally around a quarter and goes to half on hot days and little more when climbing under load...

As long as it doesn't go over te top line you are fine.....

Anywhere under half is normal mate but just like the dodgy patrol oil pressure gauges, the temps are pretty crap too. I would buy an aftermarket gauge for like 40 bucks. Then you will know for sure what is really goin on.

I too have recently done exactly what you have on my TB42 minus the thermo fans, and my did exactly the same thing with it running lkess than half prior to repairs but now runs at half or a fraction over - so it sounds like this is the norm!

For what it is worth it was explained to me that this is not a nessacarily a bad thing as it means that the thermostat is is allowing the cooling system to heat up more before it opens to circulate the water, don't know if this sounds right.

I have just replaced my thermostat with a genuine one and now it sits on just under half...used to be 1/4. But this sounds normal, i was worrying too.

thanks for the reply guys...

i forgot to mention in the first post i also have a triple core radiator and have removed the spot lights and the nissan badge that were prviously on the car when runnin at the colder temp.

and way i went to work yesty arvo at 2.30pm.... it was mid 30 degrees in newcastle, with the air con on it ran bout the halfto occaisionally a tiny bit over (but not at all high, or keep climbing).

on the way home at 10.45pm it ran exactly the same, no aircon though, and one of those big beside the road thermometers was sayin it was 21 degrees.

so it appears it has to be the thermostat. I'm not sure i like it though, i tow a reasonable size boat with the truck (19ft fibreglass) and play up the beach etc..... and am worried on a real hot day it may stuggle....

you reckon there is any merit to drilling hole around the outside of the thermostat to increase flow a little?

Cheers
