ok! so i changed the brake master cylinder and have bled the brakes on my fj40...(82 model, discs on the front) why are they still not working properly? are there other ajustments that are required after bleeding them? also is there a gasket required between the master cylinder and the brake booster? one didnt come with the new master cylinder, so i assumed it didnt need one. could this be the root of my problems?
cheers, simo.

Gasket is not needed. wont cause you a problem.
Are the brake adjusted correctly?
Have they definitely been bled correctly?

were they working properly before you put the master cyl on? Is it a daily driver?

Had difficulty getting discs to work on the 45 series ... turned out to be corrosion on the discs which in turn destroyed the pads ... new rotors + new pads = problem solved.

You would be amazed at how much braking effort comes from the drums at the rear also ... so might be a place to check - out of adjustment maybe?

check you booster.. common failure, assuming that you have a hard and full pedal but just won't stop. first check all lines in to the booster for crack's or loose, second. check vacume pump if its diesel. third check booster diaphram. let me know how you go

woops sorry i see you have a 350 installed. has the car had brake problems before. A good freind of mine had a 47 with a 400 fitted and had large cam which played havoc with the engine vacume. we installed a seperate vacume pump off an old corola i think.

i had to get a new bleeder valve for the front drivers side, wasn't bleeding properly. interestingly when i put my foot on the brakes the engine lifted off idle and a big puff of white smoke billowed out the exhaust. this problem has stopped now, but it definately sounds like a vaccuum pump issue from what your saying. why would white smoke come out the exhaust though???
