if it is lifted, the small part of the shaft should be on the output and to clear the cross member

The small end should be at the gearbox end, also helps to keep crap out of slip joint.

John thats what a mechanic said but didn't elaborate, when checking the car over for rego. He only said it was the wrong way around.

I will add a tailshaft flip onto my to-do list.

Got to wonder why the manufacturers fit with the slip to the rear on 4x4s? at least I think mine is per original.

yeah comes from factory, but on 4" you need to do it to clear the xmember. Easy job anyway.

they usually deal with getting dragged over rocks better with the slip joint at the pinion end..

HAVE A ROCK GASH ON THE SLIP JOINT CAN'T BE GOOD FOR TAILSHAFT,WHERE AS HAVING SOME ROCK GASHES ON THE BODY OF THE SHAFT WONT HURT A THING.

Yeah rigggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhttttttttttttttttttttt. Until the next time you grab solid traction, and spin the tailshaft 1 1/4 turns. Nope, that small ding in the tailshaft wont do any harm.

yeah it doesn't weaken them at all ;)

the slip yolk has a protector that is solid, and isn't a load bearing part of the shaft. i'd take a ding in that over anywhere else on the shaft. plus you got the added advantage of that little bit of extra clearance,

Its the length of your shocks not lift of springs that affect wether shaft will hit or not.
Jack up under chassis both sides until wheels off ground, shaft need to be atleast 10mm away from crossmember. If not swap end to end so slip is at top.
