Drilling pinion

Whats the easiest (best) way to mark out and drill the pinion on toy centres to suit Rover drive shaft. I don't really want to have to remove the pinion. To those who have done this, how did you do yours?

Unbolt the flange, you will probably have to make a male to male locator as well so you have true centre for the tailshaft as well.

just a had a look at the drive shaft and pinion flange, and i could make a locator with the rover pattern drilled in it, just haven't read anything about doing this when other people have done this conversion. :?

Drilling the flange is fine, never had a problem with this.

Yes drilling the flange is fine, but i've never read about having to make a locator. Is it necessary, have others done this, thats what i'm asking

You can get away with not doing it, but you may end up with vibes you cant fix or shagged bearings. Better to do it right the first time.

Toy pinion flange needs machining to take rover shaft.

Drilling the pinion flange is easy.

I dont understand why you would make a male to male adapter? To fit Rover shafts to a Toyota Flange you need to machine a recess into the Toyota flange for the rover shaft to locate. You cant just drill the flange out and bolt the shaft up. It wont bolt up flush. I have done this conversion enough times to know the flange must be machined.

Unless you have ground the locator off your rover tailshaft???? :shock: Or you have machined up a spacer that is female to male?

The OD of the locator on a Rover Shaft is "about" 5mm larger in OD than the Toyota one. I usually throw the Toyota flange in the lathe and machine the flange to suit the Rover Shaft then take a spare seperated Rover Yoke and Tack weld it to the Toyota Flange then use the Rover Yoke as a guide to drill the Toyota flange in a drill press.

This may have happened when the Nissan diffs went in :roll: :D

I have also converted a Nissan flange to Rover and it needed a spacer made up. More like an Egg ring as the locator on the Nissan is larger than the locator on the rover.
