hmmm mog portals v's Volvo drop axles...
ok guys...
I was talking with the local 4x4 guy. I believe his name was mick at {enter plug}QLD 4x4 spares and repairs bogan street albion {end plug}
ANd we got talking about a few things about my 80 g/box issue and then we got started about sam's moggy and how i wouldn't mind doing something like that with my 75 series and all...
"Put vovlo diffs in it" was the reply..
"Hasn't been done before and you can get parts easier."
Sounds great idea to me, but how do these stack up against the mogs for strength and comparison
Any mog boys got some ideas ?
why did you use mog diffs over volvo's ?

i have volvos and i think they're great.
they're not as wide as mogs or as strong but they are much easier to bolt in and they are much lighter.
the front is offset to the right and the rear is near centre but also to the right. this makes it good for lots of tcases: cruiser, hilux, rangie, suzuki etc...
you don't need torque tube conversion and they are really easy to put into a leaf sprung rig.
the commonly available ratio is 7.16:1 but you can get 5.99:1 too. they have a vaccuum operated diff lock front and rear that can be converted to cable actuation.
they have drum brakes front and rear but these actually work quite well
the drums have a centrifugal seal which vents after you've accelerated a bit. this seals them from mud and water at slow speed but vents heat at higher speed.
hit me up if you need more info.

top stuff nam
Yeah it sort of concerned mne a little when he said its easy enough to get parts for them...
the whole being is if you break it, that sucks imho.. thus why were are going to all the effort of putting portal mogs style (and strength) diffs in...
Can you locate these (complete) front and rear diffs at all for me nam?...
I'm weighing up the pros and cons of it all..
Considering you spend x grand on some air locker bits and still wacth it all go boom when you serve it up..or i could fit x type portal diffs and never worry about them like sam has with his...

Currently Sam is the only Mog guy here i know of but Volvos have been done before and Lots. The US guys have used them heaps with varying degree's of success. Search Offroad General Store on Pirate this guy has been running Volvo's for a long time and has broken lots.
And i dont beleive you can get parts in Aus for the volvo's easier than Mogs.
I also beleive there may be another Volvo Axled rig being built or maybe allready compleated in Aus. NAM you know anything about this?

wms width = 176cm (they run fully backspaced 16x9 rims)
it's true that maintenance parts are easily obtainable. i've had my volvos fully rebuilt (new bearings, seals, boots, etc...) not sure about spare r&p and lockers but portal reduction gears are simple and should should be easy to reproduce. defender 110 (or maybe rangie) cvs can be used to replace broken volvo cvs (new shafts will need to be made). brakes are servicable with rover parts.
there are 4 sets of volvos in victoria. mine are sitting around. 1 set in a series 3. 1 in a jeep bodied, rangie framed thing. and the other set was planned for an fj40 but i'm not sure where they're up to at this stage.
they're good diffs. if you really trash them, you can always put the portal boxes onto your favourite housing. they are not as strong as mogs and many cvs have been broken in the states. i've also heard of the rear locker failing but that was in a competition rig. they are perfect for a light rig or a buggy.

This is the problem with any diff that you are going to swap in, if you drive it hard enough you will eventually break it.
Which is why ive bought a complete spare set of mog axles (more $$$).
Mick (bobtail) has bought a mog 404 rolling chassis so he is going to be running the same axles as me so we will have a spare set of axles between us.
To get mog parts isnt a big deal as these axles are still in service around the world and so you can still buy new replacement parts for them from a few different companies in germany (so Im led to believe). You can actually buy mog 404 axles totally reconditioned in a create.
I figger if I break something I got the spares on hand to swap in straight away and then I will get the spares from overseas.
The volvos are definately easier to swap in though and you would quite easily drive a volvo axled rig on the street.
The mogs are a very big axle.

http://www.unimog.com.au/ these guys would prolly have lotsa mog spare etc aswell

Punchy, i looked at both of these options!!!
The MOGS are bang for $$$$, 5k and you get the lot, strength, lockers blah blah blah, yes they would require slight more work in fitting!
The volvos WILL set you back close to if not the same as the MOGS! I was going to get them cheap and i still turned away from them! Going by the guys in the states there seems to be a mixed response, some say they are weak as and some say they take a pounding! But what is a pounding that one person is talking about compared to what another is talking about!
N.A.M how can you say that the VOLVOS are unreal, you never drove on them???
For $$$ value i would go with the MOGS!!!
Here are some pics of MOGS and VOLVOs!
P.S next time you are talking to "MICK" say hi from Adrian!

No Tony I know its on my computer, cause I checked at work and it was the first time I could view pics of my own truck. I've tried everything from deleting my history, deleting all cookies, changing my security settings making this site a safe site, restarting again from the original site, refreshing page, refraining from looking at porn, refresh and ctrl the page still nothing. When I open a page it comes up as the page cannot be found . The only thing I haven't tried is kicking it or throwing it out the window. I have posted that I am having probs and looked through all the history looking for an answer but nothing. I am computer illiterate but hey I'm learning , any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bet you have norton's Internet Security, try turning down nortons browser security settings, (I forget the exact setting) but anything they have listed as browser security you can turn down with no real risk.
If you are a bit up tight about browser security upgrade you internet explorer to version 6.1 sp1 (latest I think)
PM me for more details

corrections for adrian...
in my own opinion, volvos are unreal compared to normal diffs (apart from strong danas). i wasn't saying volvos are better than mogs because i don't believe them to be. i said why mogs are better, but i also said why volvos make a good alternative. if volvo's aren't for you, fine.

volvo-wise... we're talking about the c303 and c304 laplander.
probably started production in the sixties, fully retired from production in the eighties.
used by the swedish and malaysian armies. also some emergency agencies in europe used them too (fire, ambulance, rescue etc...)
diffs were produced by salisbury (related to spicer & dana), who also produced the rover diffs at the time. this explains the many parts commonalities.
good sources for diffs: US, europe, malaysia or australia (if you know the right people).
they are now rare and in high demand thus making them quite expensive. from malaysia, you're looking at over $14k for 3 sets shipped to australia.
mogs i know very little about.

What $5,000?
I have $5,500 in my current hilux set up and they are a weak POS. But its what i spent my $$$ on and im stuck with them.
For approx $6,000 you could buy Mogs and set them up ready to go in. But then you need suspension mods to suit them.
Well im about to do the same mods i would have needed to run Mogs so im now getting further into the RED with Weak Ass Diffs.
