H15x/ 1HDx upgrade questions

Post by smithie »

G'day guys.. I've spent the last few days searching the archives on this and other forums to get as much info as possible about doing a swap into my 1990 SWB 70 series (PZJ70 - 5 cylinder 1PZ) 4.56 ratio diffs

My vehicle was stock but is now running 35's.. the 1PZ powers along ok and I havnt had any real complaints about it ( it is a little slow on hills but can stick to 100-110 fairly easy)

However.. My gearbox is an R151F..and yep..I've done 5th gear.. :?

I've been thinking about what Gbox to put back into it. I was originally going to drop a 75 series H55F into it, however if I'm going to drop something in there it may as well be as tough as I can get in case of future power upgrades..so I think I'll go for a H15x

Now a H15x isnt that cheap from a wreckers so it got me thinking, maybe I buy a wrecked 80 series and drop a complete 1HDx/H15x into it-and get a power upgrade at the same time??

it should be fairly simple as my 1PZ is basically a 1HZ missing a cylinder.

SO:
Which H15x is better H150F or H151F
From what I've researched, the H150F is better for offroading.. and considering the 35's.. lower ratio 1st/2nd/3rd would be good..

But does the H150F come behind a 1HDx??

Which would be the better 1HDx to look for
post 93 1HD-T (better synchros etc)
or 1HD-FT
I dont think I'd look at the 1HD-FTE due to more complex electronics...the reason I wanted diesel in the first place was to stay clear of electronics..

Bear in mind I want to be able to have bush-mechanic reliability.. a tough Gbox.. decent offroad ratios and a bit more power for cruising
Or should I just find a box and stick with the 1PZ?? -which is going fine after 320 kms

Also its my understanding that the 1HZ never came with a H15x g'box behind it is this true???

Sorry if this was a longwinded post.. but I've researched a fairb bit of info and still have quite a few q's!

Cheers

Come on guys someones gotta know something??!!

Which H15x is better H150F or H151F
does the H150F come behind a 1HDx??
its my understanding that the 1HZ never came with a H15x g'box behind it, is this true
ALSO:
Is the output shaft on a H150F the same as on a H151F?
Will a H15x gearbox that was mated to a fulltime 4x4 Transfer case mate up to my R151F Transfer case
Does anyone know what number my Transfer case is?? Is it a HF1A???
Will a H15x Part time G/box/transfercase combo have the shift sticks in the right position? Or will the transfer shifter come out in the wrong spot? I've heard you can use a FZJ80 Transfer shift lever to fix this - is this true??

Thanks

Hi

Early 80 series had a 1HZ H150F I think that HDT motors had a different output shaft could be wrong on this.

Yes, in the turbo diesel 78/79 series. Then you have to deal with electronics.

or 1HD-FT
the 1HDFT makes a bit more power but better fuel economy than the 1HDT

The naturally aspirated 80 series (HZJ80) came with an H150f gearbox. When the 100 series started, Toyota decided to cut corners and use the R151f instead.

I was told that it wouldn't. Post your question on 4WD Monthly forum. The moderator (GG) there has swapped a 1HDFTE with an H151f into an HZJ105 that has the same transfer as yours.

If it is a PZJ70, it is a BF1A

A gearbox and transfer from an 80 series, no. A gearbox and transfer from a petrol/turbo diesel 78/79 series, yes.

I'm looking to get a complete driveline out of a wreck, and i dont want to get a 78/79 TD cruiser (because of the electronics and cost) -although it would be the best option in terms of gear/transfer stick placement etc-
SO
I'm thinking if I could get a 1990-1998 TD 80 series with a 1HD-T/1HD-FT and H151F I could possibly use a shifter setup from a 78/79 series H150F.
Is this possible? Do the H150F/H151F series gearboxes have interchangable gearshifter mechanisms??

Also: Is the chassis width (and hence the gearbox cross member) different from an 80 to a 70 series? Or should I also get the cross member off a 78/79 series? -s'pose i could booty fab a cross member (with better ground clearance!) if need be-

Thanks again.

Mate, you need a part time transfer with whatever you get...so the 78/79 box looks good. Put a turbo hdt motor infront, or a 1hz with turbo from a std van 80 with its 5 speed h150 and part time transfer.
Best turbo diesel motor is the hdft 95 or later, but the earlier ones are still a freight trane motor...just need more maintanance on the bottom ends.
Hey, if you want 4.1 diffs after the conversion, i will swap you :)

thanks for that reply andrew.. if i need 4.11's you'll be the first i let know, however my 4.56's are doing me just fine right now!

Yeah I will need a P/T transfer (HF1A) with whatever I get, it was my understanding that the DX 80 series 1HD-T/1HD-FT were part time 4x4.. correct me if i'm wrong here as I was hoping I could wait and find the right wreck with a complete driveline, rather than have to source parts from multiple vehicles..

cheers
