help - starting whinning noise/wont turn off!

Post by lc61vx »

Something wierd happened today... I started the beast then immediately, I could hear this whinning sound (starter motor? fuel pump? or ???)... It was alarming enough to turn her off..... so I turn her off... but to my amazement, she didn't turn off! It just keep idling.... so the key is out of the ignition now and she is still idling ... idling very very slowly... I was going to pop the hood and hit the engine off lever but.. I just manually stalled her... I then started it up again and things where back to normal.... it started blowing excessive white smoke for 2 mins then the exhaust was crystal clear again.... any ideas? this has me baffled... I dont have a clue.

Fuel cut solenoid stuck open allowing it to run because the fuel was still flowing. When restarted there was excess unburnt fuel which caused the white smoke. That's my guess anyway.

This happened again today... I tried to stop the engine using the engine stop lever but that didn't work. I tried to stall the engine and that still didn't turn the car off... a few seconds later, the whining noise stopped and things were back to normal again... this is too weird

I cant explain the white smoke, but it sounds like you could have a buggered ignition switch, or a gremlin in the electrics anyway.

Bloody hard to say without looking at the vehicle but I would be looking at the fuel pump .. edict motor. I'm not even sure 12HT's have an edict motor (basically elec motor/solenoid that shuts down fuel pump). I know the 2Hs do but the 12hts are a very different motor. If they do then when they are working and you start the car, the edict motor turns the pump to full rich then back to idle and when it is switched off, it shuts the pump down. If your 12HT does have one then it might be playing up and causing these sorts of problems.

Get someone to start it and stop it whilst you are watching the fuel pump and see if you can spot such a solenoid/motor at work. If you can spot it then check to see if it looks like it is playing up and not being consistent.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers

I dont think the direct injetion motors have this set up Simo. I may be wrong. I know the 3b (indirect) Inline pump, has the set up you are describing, But the 14b (direct) rotary pump doesnt. Dont shoot me just correct me if I am wrong.
Cheers.
