LPG stalling when motor warms up....
Hi Guys,
I have a 351 with a duel fuel set-up. Its an older system similar to an impco set-up.
it has suddenly started running roughly...in the morning when its cold I can complete the 25min drive to work no worries....
on the way home as soon as the motor gets warm(bout 10-15mins) the motor starts to cough and lose power, and generally nearly stalls...
if I put my foot down it splutters and generally dies....at this stage I switch to fuel to drive home...
I thought it may have been getting a bit lean once warm so I opened up the gas screw( metering thing, thats on the gas line after mixer and before the carbi).. it seemed to be a little better for a few kays then died again...
any help would be greatly appreciated.....

It sounds to me like the converter is freezing up. Just make sure the water flow through the LPG converter is sufficient to keep converting the liquid into gas. Often if the water circulation is poor, eventually the converter will freeze effectively halting the supply of LPG to the motor.

Yeah you would think that but not necessarily. I have seen them run okay when cold but freeze up as the gas is being passed through them for a while ... coincidentally the motor is getting warmer but if it is not warming the converter then it will be getting colder as the gas is being passed through it and into the motor ... eventually freezing up and stalling the motor.bumpy wrote:thanks for the replys....

A speed camera would have prevented that!
I had a 351 XC and it was duel fuel. My convertor started to freeze after a short drive, and if you pop the bonnet you will see it with ice all over it. The head gasket had gone and it was loosing water to a point where there was not enough to keep the convertor from freezing. Caused an air block.
Was able to get home on petrol.
Have your radiator checked for exhaust gas contamination and that may be your problem. What is your temp guage like.

Funny how most of the replies (aside from RN) are from Rangie Owners ... looks like we've all had Rangies on gas in an attempt to keep their running costs down ........ that's cos they use fuel like it's free
Well they probably use less fuel compared with the later large petrol tojos and pootrols
And they are a far better off road vehicle

hey guys,
well the convertor is definatly getting hot....before i left work a mate opened one of the water lines as he said his had a block and that would let the air out...
this was done with the motor going.....water came straight out so he thought it probably wasnt that....and the convertor was warm right away....
I will try the radiator cap off trick over the weekend...

Water leaks eliminated.
I think it has been posted previously that the convertors get gummed up with a varnish type substance after a while.
Maybe, and just maybe as the convertor gets warm the varnish gunk melts and clogs the system, and over night solidifies and causes no problems until it warms up again.....
or it is something completely different that I have no idea. Ask Barnsey he is medically trained to deal with weird shit. .
