Steering box help
Steering box help
Hi you guys!
My I-Zook project is coming along slowly but surely.
I´ve run into a potential problem with the steering box; I had planned to use the one I got from the LJ70 ´Cruiser but that box mounts to the outside of the frame rail and with my Hilux front axle I will need to mount my springs outside of the frame rails as well.
I see a probable conflict coming up there.
The solution of this conflict will be a steering box that mounts to the inside of the frame rail and preferably one with the pitman arm pointing backwards for x-over steering.
The question is which steering box to use???
Any help will be appreciated.
For anyone who´s been following my slow-going I-Zook project:
I ended up swapping my LJ70 front axle housing for a Hilux one, but I´m keeping the LJ70 high-pinion differential, into which I´ve installed an LSD from a 4Runner rear, and the behind-the-axle tie rod, and I´ll be making my own steering arm for the passenger side knuckle to get the steering rod over the springs which will be sitting on top of the axle.

if you don´t know its impossible, you just might do it!
Use a Scout box out of a generation 2 model it sits inside the frame with the pitman pointing back wards .This is inside drivers side in Aus ie right hand side.
Or i used a 80 series landcrusier box just pushed it forward of my coil bucket then extended the shaft from the steering uni joint up at the fire wall to the uni on the new steering box only deal with this is that its a forwrd faceing pitman arm

I should have said that my rig has the steering on the left side, so in effect I could use a steering box that sits outside the frame rail with right hand steering. But I guess that most car manufacturers build different boxes for left and right hand steering and parts that are specifically made for right hand steering are rather hard to come by here in Scandinavia.
So,,, you part gurus from left hand steering countries: Any suggestions??
Oh, I almost forgot to specify: It´s a power steering box I´m after.

Unfortunately it´s not feasible to order a relatively heavy object like a steering box all the way from Oz to Iceland where I´m doing the buildup.
I need to find something that comes from a common, left hand drive japanese or european car = CHEAP! This is, after all, a low budget project.
Maybe I´m jumping ahead of myself here anyway, maybe there will be room enough for the steering box on the outside of the frame rail, maybe there WON´T be room on the inside because of the accesories on the Volvo engine I´m using: both the AC-pump and the alternator are mounted on the engines left side.
I´m really just fishing for useful info.

Talk to someone in the UK and source an IFS hilux steering box. This will mount inside the chassis rail on the LHS with a rear facing pitman arm. Also, Hilux boxes can be converted to hydro assist which vitara boxes can't.
I would have thought that freight from the UK would have to be as cheap as you could get to iceland.
We have looked at the same problem here and the obvious ideal box for us is a LHD IFS hilux box but LHD markets are all some way from here

Get a box out of a early 80's toyota celeca or Crown car . the celeca is there 2.0 coupe with a straight 6 sometimes and the crown is a 4 door sedan with the same motor . they sit on the inside of the rail . In the cars the pitman arm points foward but you just take it of and point it backwards for a zook. the steering shaft is the right length and all for it too .

Thank you guys.
Now I have something to work with.
I take it that the RHD (UK) 4Runner would have the steering box mounted on the outside of the frame rail, thereby meeting my requirements for inside mounting on the left side?
Plenty of LHD 4Runners in Iceland and Celicas, Crowns and Cressidas were common in their time, wonder if any of them are still around.
I´ll go the wreckers round when I get back up there.

Yes, the RHD 4Runner would do the trick. Please note, I have never actually trued to fit one, but on paper, it looks the business- certainly neater and more "stock" looking than anything with a forward facing pitman arm.
I think that 2WD RHD Hilux pickup boxes are suitable too.
Steve.
(We went through this for a long time with Greg's new zook buildup. In the end, we decided to go with a vitara box after investigating all sorts of other options including new delphi boxes. The hassle of getting a LHD hilux box in Australia knocked the idea on the head, but we are aware that the vitara box is less than ideal, but cheap and readily available.)

Too bad we´re so far apart Steve, otherwise I could get you a LHD box and you could get me a RHD one
I´ll check out the Vitara box, there´s plenty of them around in Iceland.
I don´t need to worry about "stock looking"; my Zook will be so far from stock it won´t fool anyone. But of course, a pro looking installation is far better than something hung in there in a slapdash manner.
Slapdash ain´t my style anyway.
Thanks for the input.
