loose connection in lights ???

Post by 81 rangie »

would anyone have any ideas why my high and low beam lights only work intermitently. I have a new switch, which made no difference. (the parkers always work) I was wondering if there is a relay or somethin that can play up, by the way it is an 88 range rover

Which switch did you replace? Its possible that the high beam switch may be playing up, and interfering with the other, I believe. Otherwise a previous owner may have rewired the headlights through a relay, and the connections may have worked loose....

Don't quote me on the high beam switch, but have a go at fiddling with it and see if the lights come on if you jiggle it around a bit. As standard, the rangie will not have a relay for the lights, the power will come from the battery, go through the switch, and then to the lights.... You can gain some lighting quality and stop burning switches out by wiring high and low beams through a relay....

I have the car today, so i will try that. If i jiggle the small switch on and off, it sometimes works, but i can't understand how it could be that switch as it is just new

Standard rovers don't have relays for the lights, but it is wise to fit them. Improves the light output and saves the switches which fail when they get hot.

I very nearly had a nasty incident one night when my switch failed.

Nothing better than Lucas Prince of Darkness striking at 100km/h on the highway, is there?

check the contacts on the back side of the ignition barrel, i had the same prob my lights would work when you moved all the wires under the dash and not when you let them go.
turned out it was a loose connection on the back of the ignition barrel just taped it up and now it works fine.

Is your switch the same or similar to the Defender switch?

I had the same symptoms. Parkers switched on, flick the switch to the headlights; parkers turned off and headlights did not come on.
