Series HR Transfer case?

Post by Tikirocker »

Just curious if anyone here has had the Melbourne FWD's HRTC conversion done? I'm in the midst of a restoration of a 64 S2A 88" with a Holden 186. I've got an oil cooler but when weighing up between an overdrive and HRTC with a Holden engine the HRTC seems to be the better way to go. Anyone got any experience with them?

Best, Simon.

Hi - I fitted one around 2 years ago, but got it from a Queensland mob.
Reason been - even with shipping to Melbourne it worked out to be the same price as 4wd's but they didn't want a change over t-case.

I'm happy with it - 2900 rpm on the HWY @ 100k, but I would do it different now. The series gearbox is a piece of puss, for the same or a few $ more it would be possable to fit a four speed auto or a 5 speed manual and keep the transfer stock. Fix two problems at once.

Who were the QLD mob that did the job and what was the ballpark price? I like Series Gearboxes actually, but then again I'm a retro grouch.

I'll get back with the qld name - can't remember
I just ordered the gears and modded case $800 - roughly

It's easy to fit, DIY / no brainer - trouble is you end up replacing heaps of extra stuff. Add to your costing, bearings, seals rear output shaft ? I spent an extra $300 on all this extra stuff. I've had two series transfer cases in top condition + an overdrive thrown at me since i did the conversion. . The hstc is an easy and good way to get hwy revs down, but value for money - it aint.
