LSD for a jimny?
LSD for a jimny?
Firstly I assume that the diffs are the same for the jimny as the older sierra. I was looking at a diff locker for the rear, but thought a LSD would be almost as effective. Concidering that I have bugger all cash I thought I could replace the rear diff with a lsd diff from something else.
Am I right or more the likely way off track.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

new LSD's are worth more than airlockers!!gecko270 wrote:Firstly I assume that the diffs are the same for the jimny as the older sierra. Apparently there are factory optional LSD's for Jimny's, but best of luck finding them from a wreck. From Suzuki they would be awsomely expensive, and junk compared to a locker- There is absolutely no comparison between the traction delivered by a locker and the traction delievered by a factory style LSD.
If you are very tight for cash, look into the Lokka type locker. These are adequate for on road use (i.e you get used to the odd things they do) but they do work well off road.
Steve.

the jimny diff is different to a seirra, so a seirra locker won't fit, sorry.
i got my detroit locker from op-lock, $600 fitted. about 18 months ago.
they'll tell you that you can't get one for a jimny, but the part number for the detroit is 810A26 (without side gears). it's a lot cheaper without the side gears, than with. i also don't think you can a detroit with the gears for a jimny.
the part numbers for the Richmond Gears, Lockrite is 1512 (without side gears) and 1532 (with side gears). i don't know of anyone using these, so i can't comment on them. but they were more than $200 dearer than the equivilant Detroit at the time i was looking.
i recommed the Detroit. i've had no problems and Zukiny has run one for years as well.

If you want to get a detroit or lock right, look into shipping it in from the states, heaps cheaper, and most of the time you get good service. A fair few of us have ordered stuff from the states and have had good results.

sorry they only make them for the rear.gecko270 wrote:Is that for Front or Rear or both? What are side gears? Excuse my ignorance.
there is nothing avalible for the front, so just weld it. front diffs are cheap.
the lockers without the side gears, use the original diff's side gears as part of the locking-unlocking setup. they recomend having a little wear on your diff, if you are going to us this type.
i'm not too good at explaining the parts inside the diff. but if you have the manual, on page 457, there is a pic showing the parts it is part #6.
if you haven't got the manual go to BORIS (from jimnyword) site in Sweeden, he has a link so you can down load it in PDF format. i think the site is www.jimny.se it is in the tech section.

Cheers all for the advice. It's much appreciated. Just how much does having one of these actually effect the performance of the vehicle. Is it similar to the difference between a 2WD and 4WD where a locker will increase the performance 10 fold again. If it does then bloody oath I'm gettin one.
lay80n when you say they are cheaper from america, just where can I get them from? What sort of postage are we looking at?

i found the difference, from locking the rear, to be comparible to night and day.
the same again, can be said for adding a welded front. way more stable when climbing steep stuff. the extra traction is a god send.
