GU steering box in GQ
GU steering box in GQ
ive heard of people doing this, my GQs steering box is leaking badly, why do people convert to the GU box, are they stronger? less prone to leaking? do they bolt straight in or do things need to be modified to make them fit? if so whats involved?
yes stronger pitman arm, bigger pump, and different valving means less turns lock to lock i think. the GU pitman arm has taper is slightly different and is the other way up so you do need an adjustable steering arm so you can flip the end (the tapers are close enough to the same IMHO). An alternative is the late model GQ (or GQ ute) steering box which is also significantly bigger and stronger than the early model GQ. The pitman arm taper is the same way up so no adjustable arm required. Still the same turns lock to lock as original early model unit.
