engine re-build

Post by breedy »

have got a 94 1.3 sierra which is blowing smoke as i drive which would mean new rings i guess, would that be something a backyard diehard mechanic with a suzuki text book could do,remove sump & head, push out pistons,re-ring.new bearings& valve stem seals, bolt back together,or is it something i should get a mechanic to do,or would i be better off getting a reco engine, does the sump come off while its still in the vahicle?any info would be appreciated, its only done 150,000 ks but maybe the chick i bought it off trashed it as it was in a bit of a state when i got it unregd etc.....trying to get out of it cheap!

Be a bit careful of just re ringing a sierra. I have seen a whole bunch re-ringed that end up as smokey as they always were within a few months.

Apparently they tend to ovalise their bores, and a quick hone won't really fix this.

By all means have a go, but don't be surprised of it doesn't last. Sorry to be a bit negative.

I have seen a number of sierras get really smokey at around the 150 mark, including my own some years ago, so from that point of view, that's about right.

If mine goes, i'm gonna shop around 4 a second handie and take a gamble - seem to be anywhere from $500 to $800 cause everyone wants to dump them for a 1.6. Mines got 237000 on the clock and is on its second engine - in there when i got it, so yeah they don't last as long as a big v8 or anything unfortunately. there are a few threads about engine rebuilding from the last 6 months or so from memory - there is debate about the ovalising of the bore as Gwagensteve mentioned, a lot of people seem to say that you should rebore it anyway - im no pro (and don't pretend to be... :) ) so it would be good to hear the opinions of others...

I rebuilt mine about 6 months ago. Cost me about a grand all up. Thats with good Pistons, moly rings, new valves in head, cam, clutch, replaced just about everything. Very easy engine to rebuild. And quite cheap.
