how do you replace broken engine mount??

just wondering if its possible for an engine to move on its mounts and kinda get unbalanced at idle?

i have this wierd issue whenever its idling, the cab and front end vibrate quite a bit more, its loud and i dont like it. when you apply power it smooths out and is fine. its still idling around what it used to 650rpm so i dont think its anything too technical.

i know i drive a 40 and you have to live with rattles and vibrations but this is the worse its ever been and i think it started after ormeau the last weekend. its got worse enough now i need to do something about it.

if the engine mount bolts are loose is it possible to move the engine a fraction during some bouncy off-roading? If so how do you re-balance it and find that sweet spot again? I was thinking a block of wood + trolly jack under the sump and then im not sure what. and check the engine mount bolts too. i have noticed that one of the rubber mounts is a bit twisted and that its been like that for a while..

due to my lack of experience in this area i thought itd be wise to get some advise first..

sounds like a busted or badly worn engine mount, and or gearbox mount.

Yes, jacking up engine and box should show you whether this is true.
I don't know anything about 40's, but my zook ones can be broken and not be visibly obvious.
Usually the passenger side, as this gets more strain.
Some mounts are designed not to let go completely when busted, and can get metal to metal contact.

I have never heard of an engine mount having a sweet spot and cant see how it would be possible, but i have heard of stranger things so any thing is possible

U could just turn up the idle till the vibs go away? Thats what i would do cos im lazy

I broke both my engine mounts. The left hand one made no noise, but the rhs one RATTLED like fark at low speed and sometimes at idle. Thought it was a suspension problem at first, but found it to be the engine mount. The motor HAD twisted slightly so that the remains of the rhs mount were metal on metal, but only rattled at low engine and/or vehicle speeds.

well.. stuck my head further under the bonnet and discovered the passenger side mount is torn and the motor has twisted a little.

are these usually hard to replace myself? If not I will order the part and look at getting it in myself..

what do I do If i need to move the engine sideways though (although if the other mount is attached then I shouldnt need to do that right?)??

That's pretty much it. Make sure you use a block of wood between the jack and the sump - speads the load across the sump and prevents damage from the jack.

Care and attention and it's a piece of cake. Don't know anything about 40's, but in some cases, you may need to loosen the other engine mount to be able to get enough lift to remove the busted one.

From experience... Just make sure that your engine is well supported. I had mine fall off the jack when the mount had been removed (but before the new one went in...) Fortunately, I was a few feet away at the time and no fingers were anywhere near it - but it did rip out my aircon and radiator hoses.....

Forty should be pretty easy to do....plenty of room in there. Just be careful of fingers. Helps if you've got assistance from somebody else.

Also, be careful if using a trolley jack. Some of them don't lift straight up.

Be careful where you're jacking underneath. Sumps can be very easy to push in as they aren't designed to support the weight of the engine.

Sometimes it's better to jack it off the lip of the bell housing, but be careful as it's more likely to slip off the jack.

argh..
all i have to say is wot a karntovajob!!!!!!

getting the broken one out was easy enough..
but then i maxed out my trolley jack + wood
and then with the bottle jack and a brick and some wood it got higher
and then the bottom bit of the mount wouldn't line up so i had to jack it up again so i could start the thread..
and now its on and the mechanic is doing the next one i break..
and yes i did loosen the other side to help but it didnt help much
