compression ratios + compressor sizes

Post by shakes »

I know this isnt overly 4x4 related but.... (mods feel free to move this to chit-chat)

as well as the 4by I play a lil with old datsuns, I'm currently building an L-series 1.8 efi turbo motor and trying to work out the ideal compression ratio with the best suited turbo to match. being totally new to the engine building game does anyone out there know of any sites, books to read or have any info that would be of value to me?

I've done a reasonable amount of searchin and havent come up with a whole lot

Cheers

A good book to get hold of would be 'Turbochargers - by Hugh Mcinnes' its published by HP books and is available from most decent speed shops (that sell books)
Its a little dated (1984 - still newer than the L18 ;) ) but none of the main theorys have altered that much, probably the best book on turbo theory ive read, lots of maths, compressor maps, explanations etc.

is it a L18 or a Z18 (with the twin spark plugs and crossflow head)?

stock they run about 8:1 compression I think, but compression ratio across the entire L series range is pretty low, in the 8 - 9 range.

to size your turbo look for an engine that makes similar or slightly higher power to your power goal and grab a turbo off that motor from a wrecker/importer. turbos are fairly forgiving, especially at the sort of performance level you're looking at - too small is no good - it will make good torque at low rpm but choke higher in the range, and too big will not make decent boost until too high in the revs, so just aim for one off something similar.

dumbdance its the L18, factory compression is around 9.1:1 mark, I'm using (simply because its there) the head off the L20 which should bring me bang onto 8:1 (ish) and I'll most likely be using a T25 off a silvia, again because I've got a T2 series manifold for nothing.

This combo from what I've read and people I've spoken to should be pretty close to spot on for a nice even power band but because I'm building everything completely on my own and on a budget I'm tryin to work out the best kinda combo before i start!

Cheers
