1990 4Runner 2.8 diesel QUESTIONS

Post by giffo »

I am having a look at a 2.8 ltr diesel 4 Runner. What are these like for power?
Will it tow a boat that is 1.3 tonne? Will it struggle up a hill?
What things do I look for when I check it out?

Thanks again, all info much appreciated,

Steve-Sydney

will tow the boat, but not too good up hills. the 2.8 lux is no powerhouse. and if someone breaks your momentum up hill you screwed.

Is there much torque in them though? If I had to stop could I use low range to get going or what? Surley these things are not that bad are they??? :?:

If turbo added, will that make a BIG diff? How much to add a turbo?

Thanks

ive towed a 3 tonne trailer and stopped on a hill, in a 1992 2.8 lux, and not needed low to get going... the one thing a 3L diesel has is a LOT of low down torque- ie crawling thru creek beds at 900rpm and pulling away in 2nd high

Plenty of torque down low, and they love turbo kits.

They are good for 300k+kms if they have had oil and filter done religously every 5,000kms.

Look for hard starting, and large amounts of black smoke, this will generally mean atleast an injector obverhaul (~$400 by a diesel workshop).

Youd be looking min $3000 for a shop bought turbo system, or about $2,000 if you speak nicely to mr dumbdunce, i hear he also likes blue label :D
Cheers,
Dan.

Yep fully agree with you there Kransky, but your still screwed anyway when these things see a hill, I think I will try and get some black tinted headlight covers so it will not see the hill coming, but in saying that I tow a camper trailer with mine and doesnt seam to make much differance anyway, just get over to the left and let em all go then catch them on the flats again.
