Grease in swivels

I broke a CV on the weekend and have pulled it apart to repair.

I am running JacMac 24/27 spline axles to a standard hilux CV (hence the 27). The swivles were full of a thick grey grease (not swivel grease). I thought that swivels were generally run in swivel grease which is quite a thin grease?

Can i just repack it all using a similar grease or should i use the swivel grease? Obviously the bearings were also in the same grease.

Hi mate

I had to put new CV in my rangie the other week and was recommended by the rover mechanic to put oil instead of greese in the hub. Just filled to the level. Thats on a 1990 rangie..may be different on yours

The swivel grese is quite thin NGL1 ?
The idea being that it does not "set" so lubricates the inside of the CV and is thrown up into the top swivel bearing.
I think Toyotas use a thicker Moly grease.

Maybe because it is a Toyota CV the mechanic put in Toyota grease. logical No!!! LOL
I use LR type swivel grease and it is great, and LR changed in about 1996??? or so. If you like you can use EP90 or 140 but you have to have perfect balls not to prematurely ejaculate.

....was advised to use a mixture of both CV grease and diff oil, a sort of slurry lying in the housing...helps to stop leaks and retain lubrication as the CV revolves...so far so good

PS am running Jac Mac axles and Nissan CVs in the Disco and hope they are stronger than your yotas?

I run oil (not grease) in all my landies, as it provided better lubrication.

When I helped Michele install his longfields the other week we swapped his swivel housings for earlier model ones with a drain plug, and removed all oil seals except the hub seal, so the diff oil gois in the the swivels, which goes into the hubs, etc. IMO this is the best way, and is recommended by mal story (MD) and lots of other LR experts.

IME the CVs and CV bushes/bearing show a much lower rate of wear when run in oil. toyotas commonly wear out the CV bronze bush.

My old Hi-Lux had the same sticky grey grease, must be Tojo standard!. I run diff oil throughout, with the axle seals intact, so the oil doesn't all end up over on one side, if you happen to leave the vehicle in that position. Give her the good oil!.

Yes oil. Mainly becuase it can be drained and refilled, plus it leaks OUT when there is a bad seal. This leaking tells you to replace the seal BEFORE you go wading. With grease, when you have a bad seal, there are no signs and the mud and water get in and wreck everything..........

naa, thinner than that, it's NLGI 00 !

Most nearly any other vehicle than Land Rover spec an NLGI 2 (usually moly) grease , so you will find most non Land Rover conversant mechanics pack the CV's with something like Castrol LMM (like I use in the Pootrol.)

No they are 27Spline at the CV end. And 30 spline at the diff centre end.
