First of all, what have you blown in the diff? You may need new gears and bearings, this will cost a bit.
Second, when talking about 4wd gear "Good" and "wont cost me an arm and a leg" cant be used in the same sentence.
Save up and get it done properly, you wont regret it.

Locker ain't gunna fix that,high_lux wrote:ive been told its the crown wheel in the diff, im still driving it around but its making one hell of a sound
you'll need to fix the crown and probably the pinion first
then install a locker.
Save up and get an ARB Air locker.

if you have blown the crown wheel you will have to replace the crown wheel and pinion, as they are a matched set. it would be cheaper getting another centre from a wreckers. A new crown wheel and pinion would be very expensive, may as well rebuild the whole centre. as for a locker, save for a arb air locker, or a pro locker.
welded/spooled diffs are not only not recommended, but dangerous and illegal on road. Buy why do you think they are for rear only? the front of a part time 4WD is the best place for a welded diff, you can choose when it is running or not, and via locking hubs you can choose which wheel(s) it is turning at any given time, sure there's some in-and-out of the vehicle but in all but the tightest turns a welded front will get around and as long as you drive with the knowledge you have the front welded, ie don't give it a bootful in sharp corners, then it won't break anything either.sniper wrote:The cheapest locker in the world and it is not a bad locker at all CIG locker (for rear diff only, not recomended on road)
as for the original question, as has already been stated if you have damaged gears in your diff then you need to replace pretty much evenything in there. There is an 80 series front air locker in the for sale section for $1100 which is pretty cheap, buy it and pull the locker out, it will fit your hilux. the 80 series high pinion gears and case you will sell easily for $200, so you have an air locker for $900. you can pick up a diff for the lux in decent shape form a wrecker for $100ish if you go to the right wrecker.

Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
If you are after an ARB locker, look around US sites for them as they are about $700 - $760USD which is under $1000AUD, a fair few places will ship to Australia and with shipping and improt tax if you get charged that it still works out cheaper than to buy one here.
It's crazy you can buy an Australian made product overseas, ship it back to Oz and get it cheaper than buying it here.

I snapped 7 teeth off the crown wheel in my front diff, when i pulled it apart the metal filings hadf stuffed the cv seals, all bearings and pinion was stuffed...
I bought a whole new diff centre from the wreckers for about $300, bought a lockrite (auto diff lock) $600 from tjm, and installed it all with new seals, grease, diff oil for 1bout $1000 approx... the lockrite's as easy ass to install and take approx 30mins to install.
Basically i have been driving it for bout 8 months and go 4wd'n alot and has gone really, really well. It makes your car go from a standard 4wd to bein able to go up almost avary thjing you come across (untill you run out of clearance) Most ppl will tell you there shit but there is nothin wrong with em...
If you use them right...
If you want to know more reply and ill reply back,
