CV goes Bang

CV goes Bang
Well everyone says how strong the CVs are in the pajs, but i managed to break the passenger outer with not much effort at all, i went driving at Freemans Waterhole aaaaaaaaaaaages ago, and ever since driving heaps of mud had a click in the front, sounding very CV like, but everythings been fine, though i have been suss of it ever since, sometimes feeling like 3 wheel drive, but still managing to drive shit. I had pulled it apart and cleaned it out, replaced the broken boot from that day, and degreased/regreased everything, and then the other day,
BANG!
little bit of pressure, little bit of lock up a track and front lefts gone, so much for taking the shortcut to work cos i had spare time, ended up very sweaty/dirty and winching up the rest of the section, only to forget that i wasnt at the top yet, but good ol paj did me proud, and although a little dirty and stinky, i got to work!
okay so now some questions:
- How bad is it to drive around the road with the broken CV in??? it hasnt locked up and doesnt feel like it will, but i know the chances are high...
- whats a new/reco/secondhand CV worth?
- having driven round with it since thursday last week, whats the chances of the shaft being rooted also? good? i simply havent had the time to pull it apart and its still going well on the road, but hopefully ill get to it on wed...not looking forward to it
- shoulod i just buy CV and shaft? and save the time if i buy just CV and pull it apart to find the shaft rooted also???
thanks heaps guys, dean

Fit fwhs, then you can drive as much as you need.
If the spider/ball carrier has gone it will have burred the splines on the axle. Even if you can get the next CV on the shaft the burred splines cause the next spider to break as well. Replace both CV and shaft at once, or better still throw it all away and fit an axle under it, you know you want to.

free wheel hubs??? if so i already have, is it ok then to drive on it? it seems to be right at the moment...
i know i want to put a diff under it, i keep looking at options all the time, i just wish dan (miyagi) would get his arse into gear and do his so i can see how it goes and work from there, i really want to, im getting some moneys in June, i guess well see, but then maybe ill do a Zuk and keep the paj as tourer, doing 6 month trip in 18 months.... SAS tourer, sounds like hassle

Even with free wheeeling hubs, it is possible for bits of the broken CV to jam when trying to steer. This can leave you with no steering (not funny, have had my zook do it to me).

Dan you should be fine driving with a brocken CV as long as you don't use the super select or 4x4 - nothing should rotate and should not effect steering.
Have you checked that you did not strip the bolts on the manual hubs or are you sure it's a CV - don't get me wrong; they do break but I have seen a few manual hubs stripped aswell.
As you know - my last offroad outing cost me a drivers side CV and even then the left hand got me home all on it's own (snapped rear axle wasn't much help)

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading
cv
yeh nah blair, p.s- my names DEAN not dan, idiot GOSH! but anyways, yeh its definitely a CV and not a manual hub, when i was doing the service i grabbed the right hand side, the drivers sdie shaft and rotated it to which i thouhgt would be the broken CV but was actually the passneger side to which i could see the shaft moving around awkwardly within theCV, was hell clunky and what not, but i still havent pulled it apart, but its definitely not a manual hub, its been bugging me fort gaes, and finally its gone ?BANG@!
