ive got a stockman 1L 4 speed 1982 i was wondering if the series 3 rockhopper gears will fit this, cos im not sure if it is the same transfer as the 1.3L any help would be appreciated.
The SJ40 1.0l had two different transfer cases, 81-8/83 (Series 1) and this is different to the 9/83-99 (Series 2,3,4,5/MG410) which is essentially the same transfer case as a 1.3 (ratios being the main difference). This model case has a 4WD light switch and will take an aftermarket low range gear set.

A 1.0 litre case with 4wd light is only ok for 4:1 type gears.
early 1.0 litre case is no good for any gearing options available.

To make it easy, look for any case out of a 1.3 sierra as it will definitely accept crawler gears. You will then need to change the driveshaft flanges on the case and fit your transfer handbrake (not a big job and not hard). Unless yor find a narrow track 1.3 case which the flanges may be right to bolt in? really not sure on this last point but i know the distance from centre of one hole to centre of the next hole is 55mm on NT so just measure ur 1L driveshafts and see if its the same. The WT and coilys have a 60mm spacing. John

-You can put any brand of low range gear set of any ratio into any leaf spring model Sierra transfer case with a 4WD light switch whether it be 1.0l (9/83-99) or 1.3l (11/84-4/96). You are best to replace all bearings, seals and gaskets when you do it (some brands come with the these parts already).
-If it is an 82 Stockman (there isn't any such thing as a Stockman in an 82 Sierra but we'll work with that) then I think you are saying that it is a Sierra ute, yeh? Any model Sierra between 9/81 and 8/83 is a series 1 SJ40 (4x wheel drum brakes and no 4WD light on the dash). This model has a totally different transfer case set up to the next models. The differences are 1. the actual transfer case and 2. the mounting system.
The handbrake set up is the same (so you can reuse that) but the mounting system is nowhere the same as the later models, it is a 4x point mount set up. Not only will you have to purchase a new transfer case but you will have to refab the mounting system to take the new transfer case. It will have to be fabbed to the 3x point mount system (same as the 1.0l 9/83-99, and 1.3l models). It isn't an easy feat but there is always somebody that has the ability to do something. So you will also need the metal mounting arms ie. short and long as well as the actual mounts (it won't matter if all of the mounts come from a 1.3l as they are the same). I would suggest to try and get a transfer out of a 9/83-11/84 1.0l as the flanges will marry up with your existing driveshafts, otherwise get a 1.3 case but you will also have to get right flanges to suit the 1.0 driveshafts.

I was told the 6:1 up re-used one of the 1.3 shafts (input?) that wasn't same as the in the 1.0.
I was also told the 4:1 re-used the same shaft but the 1.0 version.
If any kit includes all shafts and parts, then yes, any gear set would fit any of the 4wd lighted case.
Just what I understand from what suppliers and fitters tell me.
But I understand bs travels faster than fact.
My LWB 1983 came stock with a 4wd light case, but now has a early 81 type case fitted. Mounts all changed over simply.

My Calmini 5.14, and my S1 rockhopper, reused the Low output gear (back of the transfer at the bottom, the big gear). I know cause when i blew my S1 up, it took that gear out, so had to find another standard gear (thanks HRZOOK).

Only the 4.16:1 ratio utilises the 1.0l input (so that is correct). Any other ratio needs a new input shaft as it incorporates one of the gears needed in the ratio, whether it be in a 1.0l or 1.3l transfer case.
