Hilux Brakes

Post by justinshere »

Hey,

Can someone please explain what that "thing" (see pic) is called exactly and can i remove it without causing to many problems? Im not talking about the reservoir on the chassis, im talking about the steel line and the mount on the diff.
What does it do? how does it work? can i just plug it somehow and everything is sweet or will i have problems...? Does it have something to do with carrying heavy loads- like a brake adjustment...?
I jus wanna 'clean up' the rear end.... im changing handbrake over to the disc on the driveshaft and this "thing" is next on the chopping block...

Cheers

It is a load Bias lever. when the 4by has weight on or off the back it moves the lever up or down , giving more or less bias to the rear brakes.

I removed mine ages ago with no obvious side effects. Although I now have a Willwood manually adjustable brake bias valve.

This is a Toyota Specific Question please make sure you post this type of question in the correct forum. This is not a general Tech Question.

Also there is no reason to post a question in bold or larger than normal text. People can still read it quite clearly if posted in normal size. Most people would concider a post written like that was someone yelling at them.

This is exactly what it is - unless you're doing something major to the rear end like Bee Bee, then i'd suggest leaving it or when unloaded you will lock up the rears especially in the wet and have little braking ability when carrying a full heavy load.

Brakes

Post by justinshere »

Thanks everyone.

And for the record i wasnt yelling at anyone just making it easier to read.

Anyway under extreme amounts of flex would the bias change the way my brakes work?
For example:
If one wheel was fully compressed and one fully extended goin up or down a hill would it give me any front than rear brake?(or vise versa)
OR
Does it only work under load when the whole rear end is compressed?

Cheers
