LPG problem

Post by suzidisco »

I know this must have been asked 1000 times but is 28l /100ks on gas acceptable for a 4.2efi lwb gq
AND
is it possible to put the gas tank lengthways down the car were the petrol tank now sitts as i want to put in a long range petrol tank in for outback touring.

You're getting reasonably normal gas economy for your big LWB GQ. EFI isn't helping either way when you're on gas.

If you achieve your sig line goal ('looking for bigger tyres') your fuel economy will get worse. The 5" lift isn't helping either.

I don't think there's a gas tank that would fit well the way you are suggesting. There are scuba style gas tanks but they cost a lot and don't hold that much gas, they fit in banks of three or so, side by side.

Jerry cans? Body lift and enlarge the coffin tank? If you could find a way to reroute the exhaust maybe you could put another coffin tank on the passenger side.

It kinda sounds like maybe you want a diesel though.

Petrol tanks based on the fuel can be wierd and wonderful shapes. Gas tanks being under pressure need to be cylindrical or toroidal.

Best get your gas tanks rigged up first then try and fill the remaining space with petrol.

28l/100 is not bad for gas considering most people on petrol are only around that level for petrol (25l/100km is about the norm).

If you take fuel prices into account thats about the equivalent of paying 10l/100km out of a diesel which to be honest you never will get out of a GQ LWB. Sure diesel is more available, but even with a standard dual fuel setup you should have a range of AT LEAST 800-1000km at a time, even wihtout a long range tank or jerry cans...

You should be able to run the secondary tank too if you can find one and the LPG tank isnt in the way - it would depend on your installation. If not then you may need a custom long range tank.

The price of LPG has been dropping :D :D :D  and I have noticed that the last two tanks of gas have given me more mileage and the engine seems to be much smoother and responsive.

Mine is a 93 Mav caarby duel fuel Pertronix 1 igniton. I haven't adjusted the tune in ages.

Question...the price of gas maybe regulated by supply and demand, and with the northern hemisphere coming out of their winter is it a case of the gas companies having so much gas now that they are giving us the good stuff.

I no complain. ;)

You'd be supprised as to how many "outback" places now have LPG..... on our last run out there we did just over 7000K odd trip and used LPG 99% of the time. As the "great aussie trip" becomes more popular the outback has responded by increasing the number of outlets and availability of the differing products such as premium & lpg to the older sites to cater for the tourist dollar now being spent in remote regions.

Perhaps the most strangest situation we encountered was on a station in southwest/central NT...... they had a lpg tank and bowser setup for those tourists that visited them and needed lpg, they also had ulp and diesel availible...... mind you , you paid for the priviledge it was deat stuff but cheaper than running out !

I have a 94 lwb efi patrol and was getting around 32l/100km. That was a bit high so i got it dyno tuned at LPGas1 in lilydale. It has now dropped to around 26-27l/100km around town which is good. I then lifted my patrol by 5 inches, put a steel winch bar, 10,000lb winch and 33 BFG muds. To my suprise my economy is the same (yes i have calculated and taken into acount tyre diameter changes). It doesnt go as good as it used to and i probably take it a little bit easier due to the lift but still getting the same km's.

Cheers
