hilux hi-beams

Post by dominic »

gday,
my hi beams only work when you pull teh stalk towards the driver ,flashing them.
if you push it away from the driver to 'lock' the hi beams on all the lights go out.,

anyone got any ideas as to what it might be?
cheers

My old patrol was like this when i bought it. It had been sitting eound a few years. I sprayed some electrical contact cleaner ( wd40 will work ) around and managed to loosen it up. Id try this first as maybe a bad connection.

Cheers

My lux beams are similar, sometimes they simply turn off when I flick the stalk. The contacts over time burn out and become pitted. A quick fix is some contact cleaner, just open up the stalk and spray some in there. Otherwise its a matter of getting it all replaced which is a pitta.

It will be your high beam switch
Mine did exactly the same thing i just went and bought a new switch and replaced it.
you will have to pull the steering wheel off to fix it

Also build yourself a new high beam loom using relays, this will reduce the amount of currently flowing through the stalk switch (from 16 mps for both high beams, to bout .3amps for triggering the relay) you will also get better light output.

Have a look at the electrical section for diagrams on how to make up the looms and go to www.jaycar.com.au for the bits :D
Cheers,
Dan.
