iNCREASING GVM WITH SUSPENSION??

G'day all

Looking at attempting to increase the GVM for a 3.0l GU111 - legally
Just wondering
1. anyone done this? looking at new gvm of around 3700kg
2. how did you do it (is suspension the only way to go
3. how much work and what other componenets needed to be fixed/changed
4. who did it (is there anyone in Vic to do it
5.how much did it cost

Search for a thread by 'Lucy' on Exploroz. He just went thru this with his Troopy with rooftop camper etc (setup for distance touring).

Talk to the engineer, lots of testing and changes, and cost.

Thanks bogged,

I contacted a few engineers and they basically said it was not worth the hassle. The ADR' in several ways would be breached including brakes. On actually said that even if the brakes were modified it would cost 7k just totest the brake system not to mention the chassis strenght etc

bugger that lookslike new vehicle coming up

Sounds like it is time to buy an OKA or a unimog. Uness you just need a little bit more and a Defender 130 will do.

I can tell you Lucys Troopy didnt cost $7,000 to do. hes tighter than snare drum

If all they have to do is the brake pedal pressure test then I can assure you the test isn't all that expensive. Taxis and other heavy vehicles have it done routinely and the cost is ~$100-150, depending on where and what is being tested. I had it done when I went from 25" tyres to the 31's I'm wearing now, just to cover my arse with the insurance company, (not actually asked for, but accepted in writing as being satisfactory and being fully covered.)

I cannot see the Patrol being that marginal in its braking between 3500 and 3700 kg, all that might be needed are a new set of rear links and a bit of extra bracing of the chassis.

If you haven't done so already, go to Vicroads (Clayton have knowledgable and helpful ppl on the "back" counter), and find out EXACTLY what you can and can't do, get them to give you a copy of the information, and take it back to the engineers.

Another person worth having a chat to would be Mark Cheeseman (Cheezy Racing). He knows his stuff and has a reasonable relationship with the engineer that he uses, and he might be able to squeeze it past somehow.

Other suggestions, lazy axle.
