Doing it yourself? Paying for it? Wanting cheap job? Wanting the best you can get?mudlux wrote:Roughly what would it cost to turbo a petrol SWB GQ? ..
under $1000- to 5000+
getting the most out of your system is an art. throwing a turbo on is piss easy if you have the bits.is it a major Job? etc..
A speed camera would have prevented that!
Mates Patrol 4.5 petrol cost him at least 10K to start and it has been a work in progress since. Tuning issues were a nightmare and at the time not many people had turbo'd a petrol 4.5, so it was a bit hit and miss.
It wouldn't run properly from day one, and has had major drama's with tuning to the point the engine was running very lean, and to top it off a piston broke apart and then a conrod went through the block. His engine puts out 220 kw. Whereas if you over fuel a turbo diesel you will get high engine temps it seems to be the opposite in a petrol where he found his ran a lot better and cooler when he worked out how to richen the fuel mixture. I think he has spent close to 20K on his beast.
It pulls like a freight train though.....
Turbocharging a diesel is much straight forward and in fact compliments that engine.

Its easy provided you have a good way of keeping the car fueled enough to last.
I want to turbo my GQ as well for better on road performance. Its slow as hell compared to all of the other cars I have owned.
Is there a turbo diesel variant of the 4.2? Will the exhaust manifold bolt up to a petrol motor? What about EFI conversions? Will the EFI gear from an EFI 4.2 bolt up to a carby motor without much hassle?

SWB mav. Some mods.
As far as i know.... The EFI and the TD42 exhaust manifold bolts straight up.dansedgli wrote: Is there a turbo diesel variant of the 4.2? Will the exhaust manifold bolt up to a petrol motor? What about EFI conversions? Will the EFI gear from an EFI 4.2 bolt up to a carby motor without much hassle?

Turbo
You can fit just about any turbo you want in the space just below the standard manifold. I have been chasing a diesel one but none avail at a good price so im working with what i have. Just one way of going about it, a cast turbo manifold would make things easier but im a tightarse and want to do this conversion as an example of a true budget power up.

I have just recently done this on a tb42e.
Used an rx7 series 5 turbo. I run 8psi and it makes 199.6hp @ wheels on 35 muds. I was very happy with the outcome, did it for under 2G but the extra torque and hp spun my HD clutch straight away so i had to put a suitable clutch in (an extra $700 to take into consideration). The 100% power gain makes a phenominal difference. I run the factory computer at this stage aswell.
My system consists of :
rx7 turbo
3in hiflow exhaust
front mount intercooler
custom manifold
custom airbox and snorkel
Hope this can be of some help or if anything else inspire you to definitely do it
turbo gq 4.2
i know that it can be done for relativly cheap if your willing to bolt alot of the components up
my tuner has done it on his gq swb with standard internals gq's apparently run ideal compression for a turbo
this thing has over 200rwkw if im not mistaken
simple bolt on's too
td24 exhaust manifold
not sure on turbo but very responsive
injection inlet manifold
gtr skyline injectors, pressure reg & pump
front mount
although he is using a very tunable computer autronic i believ which is a little expensive but well worth the tuning abilities
im actually collecting parts for my gq only really looking for exhaust manifiold
you can contact him i think his nic is quadcamshorty on here
cheers

Bumped into a bloke in Somerville tonight who has a diesel LWB GQ, fitted with a Turbo from a Ford XR6T. Got it cheap and it pumps out very good HP. Like some other posts , you don't have to go ' after market kits' if you like to shop around.
Having driven the XR6T, they are a great engine, so the turbocharger that they fit is no slouch .
