how many of you would by an after market warranty to cover ya 4wd its
costig 1300 for 3 years to cover everthing with a landcrusier im looking at.

read the fine print mate.... does it say it will cover "up to a certain amount". Lots of them do and you have to pay the rest :roll:

nah, We weer going to, But the kays we were doing, geting the services done would have cost us more than any repairs actually covered by the warranty. Be sure to check the $$ amounts in the fine print. I dont think a water pump is even covered as its classed as normal wear and tear

Those figures would cover bits on some cars not others. If you had to reco a petrol motor that 1500 might get you closish but a diesel would be wayyyyy off ;)

its a petrol 3f fj62, the way i see it if ti cost 1800 to repair id only cop 300 to repair it, at $7 a week to cover it it sounds good cheeper than a pack of smokes lol

I got aftermarket warranty on my Rocky when i bought it last year.
It was $800 for 3 years coverage, unlimited kms and unlimited claims.

Although there is a lot of fine print, if you have a major problem it should be covered.. and even though it may not cover it completely, it will help out a lot.

If my alternator, starter motor or fuel pump breaks down.. it has nearly paid for itself :lol: One of them is bound to go within 3 years...lol

Tomorrow I am going to see if my CV is covered.. it says so, and its making a horrible noise on lock... time will tell :roll:

Also, if I smash my teeth on the crown wheel on my diff I'm covered :armsup: If they can find a diff.. hahaha

dont do it, its bullshit

misses got it on her daewoo, had to get serviced at this overpriced shithole. Then when it did stuff up (it is a daewoo) they found it was a bad spark plug lead, so they only replaced 1. So after going back 3 more times to get the other 3 done in consecutive months!!!! I told them to stick it.

Don't do it!

If you're interested in having a warranty it tells me 3 things.

1) You should buy a new car and get a proper warranty

2) You're borrowing every cent you can afford for the vehicle.

3) You have almost no mechanical skills.



My recommendations are as follows.


1) IS a waste of money, but less of a waste than buying someone else's sh1tbox and then hoping some third party will pay to repair it.

2) This is really a bad move. Second hand cars shoudl always have some money in reserve for if something goes wrong.

3) Do something about it.

Most of these warranties are more hassle than they are worth.

I pulled my motor down (2.8 hilux) because of excessive blow by and was told it was wear and tear and was not covered by my warranty, which I thought was fair enough until I pulled the pistons out and bits of them fell off as I took the rings off.
Then it was a fight for them to recognise the claim because I wasn't a qualified mechanic and blah blah blah... In the end it got towed to Toyota with the engine in a 1000 pieces in the tray for them to repair. I got a rebuilt motor, but the aftermarket warranty only covered 1/2 the cost of the rebuild anyway.

After 15 years in the automotive repair industry i am yet to see a used car warranty that has been worth it's money!
As previously stated most warranties will only cover to a certain amount eg, electrical $500, Engine $1500, Gearbox $1000, etc. Not too many mechanics like dealing with the warranty companies either. I fyou're notr a regular customer i certainly wouldn't go out of my way to seek a warranty claim for you as it is often a long painful process.
Make sure you get a good thorough pre purchase examination and buy shares with extra $1300. If you buy the right shares in three years you could have been paid a cumulative total of $2000 in divedends and have $1800 worth of shares......

If you're having to do a service every 5,000km chances are the vehicle you are looking at is either:

a) Diesel, in which case the warranty will not go anywhere near covering an engine problem

b) a vehicle with highish km, in which case the warranty company will most likely use the "wear and tear" escape route.

These warranty policy's do actually work when you get one that is underwritten/provided by a good company and you're buying a car that suits the policy.

This is only second hand info so take it for what it's worth. I have heard that some won't cover you if your service interval is beyond their limit eg. they say every 5000km and you get it done at 5100km. Check the policy.

I spent the extra $250 when i bought my car, and i for the amount of heartache i went through to try and make a claim, its not worth it. It takes them 5 days to process the claim and send someone out to assess it... thats really good when i need my car the next day for work. They are an insurance company after all, and definately do not like paying out money, so unless your car just just up and dies for whatever reason not including, mud ingestion, wear and tear, abornormal driving conditions etc, good luck.

HotFourOk, id very much doubt any of those things willbe claimable, because they will just say its a 4wd vehicle, and the alt, starter, fuel pump has died from offroad use, mud etc... CV will just be normal wear and tear, and crownwheel teeth, most likely normal wear and tear or from offroad use.

My mate got the warranty on his 1996 v6 Vitara.

A hole burnt through the join in the extractors/headers (the 2-1 join) and they pulled the "wear and tear" card out which meant he had to pay to have it fixed himself.

However, his electric window stuffed up and he had to have the whole switchboard replaced which they covered.

I think he's going to be close to getting his moneys worth. It's only been 3 months and he has it for 3 years.

It says CV joints are covered in my warranty book... but when would a CV joint stop working other than normal wear and tear?? Couldn't they pull out that saying for every CV claim? And most other claims also, as nearly every single part in the car wears out over time.
It covers alternators.. but what if it due to worn brushes.. that is normal wear :? So it all does sound a bit suss now i dig further :roll:

you may be lucky but in 15 years as a mechanic i have never seen 1 of these pay out
1.the full amount
2.without hassles :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:
3.anywhere close to a reasonable time frame
4.did i say thieving :bad-words: used car :bad-words: salesmen & dodgey a----le insurance company's

the last one they tried to sell me cost $1200 with a maximum total payout of $1000 worth of claims.(not uncommon for these policies)
i think i upset them when i READ the small print & asked if they thought i had sh-- for brains

i have one at work at the moment 2nd hand ba falcon ute where the rad fucked out and filled the trans with coolant. 3 days now and we havent heard back from them. and the poor bastard needs his work ute
range rover & series one landy!

The only after market warrenty I would go for is ALL STATES warrenty. They will pay out without any hassles. Like others have said most are near impossable to get money out of.

I had my commadore covered by All States which cost around the $1200 mark at the time but I claimed on about $5000 worth of things over the 3 years I had it.

I had a full air con unit replaced and regased, altinator replaced, rear diff,rear main oil leak, and a heaps of little things here and there along the way. My mate was the mechnic who did all the work on it (authoristed all states warrenty agent) who reckons they don't have any dramas with them paying out.

All I did was take the car to them and say fix this and I never paid a cent they just bill All States.

It was that simple. :armsup:

I got a 3 year 100 000km warranty on my Rodeo when I bought it 3 years old from East Coast Commercials. It only cost $500 (maybe $550) and it paid for a new water pump and a new clutch slave cylinder.
I had to have the vehicle serviced but so long as the book was stamped by a real mechanic I could take it anywhere.
I never had any trouble with the warranty company but my mechanic said they were a pain to deal with however they always paid.
He said he wouldn't do it if I wasn't a regular customer as it wasn't worth the hassle for him.

My mechanic also said he was very surprised they paid out on water pumps (done at 95k) and that the warranty was the most comprehensive one he had seen.

Seen a fair few aftermarket warranty's, and wouldnt be getting one for my car. Pain in the arse dealing with them sometimes, and as already said, the "wear and tear" card comes out so often its not funny.

i work at a very large dealer ship and the only one iv come across is for nissan covers everything that the manafactur covers

read the fine print on the ones that dont come from a make because they are uselly just like insurance not worht it most of the ones sold with a second hand car require you to have it service at a specific dealer ship every 6months or so
