PLEASE HELP, transfer case shifter problems

Post by beaver700 »

Gday,

I just was after some urgent help right now...

Today I was in Crookwell visiting some relies... anyhow towards the end of the day I decided I would take my sierra down to the local dam and do some fishing... I used low range 4wd to descend a steep bank... after an hour later and no luck I decided to pack up and go home (250km's away). I had to climb the steep bank again, and once up the top I thought I would shift it back into 2wd again... however I was partway through shifting and the shifter got stuck, and it was stuck good. I tried jacking up front and rear wheels and turning them to try and loosen the pressure on the driveshafts.... without sucess... In the end it was getting dark and I had to walk 10 km back into town and cost me $$$ to get it back to my relies house... I am now stuck here due to this transfer case.

Does anyone know whats going on here, and a solution....

frustrated....

sorry about the long and waffly post....

Search for Shifter Sheet. Its a common problem on Sierras.
If you need to get going now... Lift your tcase lever upwards about 5-8mm like you were pulling it through the floor while selecting 2wd, 4H or 4L.

Its not dangerous or damaging to drive like this, just inconvenient.

remove your transfer shift lever from out of the box ( from inside the cab) and you will see that one of the 2 shift shafts has moved in such a way that selecting any mode is a no goer use the end of your transfer gear stick to move either one till it can be put back in and able to shift .

the cause of this is the rubber that holds the transfer case lever into the correct postion is worn and will need replacing . just make sure you replace it before you go out again or you'll find that this will be a common accurance .

here is the same problem , it happens to most people at least once :D

good luck

thanks for the hand bad juju.

Just went outside and tried to lift up the lever and shift it... it didnt seem to shift at all... Is there anyother way I could get rolling without having to pull things apart. I just need proper tools at home...

only need i think a 12mm spanner and 10mm or phillips head screwdriver and 10mm spanner to pull out lever nothing more, i think its a fix it were you stand job when it happened to me there was no way around it but to fix it there same goes for when it happened to my mate , and the above fix of badjuju's didn't work that time either , only seems to work occasionally were as pulling it out etc is a sureway to get it going again
