Mulling- 1KZTE engine swap...

Mulling- 1KZTE engine swap...
Ive been mulling over what to do with my 1992 LN106 lux dual cab...
Theres nothing wrong with the body or the chassis- theyre still fine and rust free... but the motors up to 300,000kms, and starting to get a bit tired...
I did a bit of research... parts and labour (gettin the crank checked, block re-sleaved and chem cleaned) to rebuild the 2.8D is about $3-4000 with me doing the labour myself.... + $3000ish for a turbo kit, + $1000 ish for an intercooler = $7-8000...
Anyone know what a half cut prado TD would set me back? Im thinking put a 2" body lift into the truck to clear the intercooler, and then drop the whole of the 1KZ-TE into it, wire it up, and get the TPS off a 1999-2000 hilux (when they had cable throttles) so i dont have to go to fly by wire.
Feasable? my cousins a certfied welder, so engine mounts arent an issue- and i would consider putting the prado R151 gearbox under the truck too- because ive heard G52's dont like the extra torque.
Grandfathers a diesel mech, so that side of the equation isnt a major issue.
I want to stick with diesel, i just like them- so no suggestions of Lexus V8's or commo V6's- petrols for burning stuff, not offroading
any ideas?

80 series cruiser.
There is someone on this board who's done the swap, but can't remember who.
A couple of things to consider. The gearbox and t-case are different with the 3.0L TD so you'll need to get them too. You can use your existing t-case if you buy an adapter. The only reason you'd do this is if you wanted to use rockhopper gears or dual t-cases.
You may also want to check out if it is feasible to fit a new 3.0L TD (1KD i think). They have heaps more power than the older 3.0L TD.

Given the nature of the swap, you may want a front cut - I got one priced at 5,950 but that sounds way high is the engoine itself can be gotten for 3k.Claws wrote:.TOYOTA HILUX 1KZTE Turbo, 3.0ltr Diesel Engine imported from Japan. Find out everything you need first...like ECU, wiring harness etc etc. I think for the price above it would just be the engine and nothing else.Claws wrote:.TOYOTA HILUX 1KZTE Turbo, 3.0ltr Diesel Engine imported from Japan. I dont know if there are many of the new ones in the wreckers yet..... and if i go with the older 3.0TD, i can still use a cable throttle from an early lux.Scott wrote:There is someone on this board who's done the swap, but can't remember who.

Navigator for Amelia in the 2007 stroller pushing championships !!
im still looking around...
I think i'll wind up using the prado engine- as its got the factory cooler and a slighly higher state of tune. (96kw/343nM vs 85kw/295nM) so i'll go home and attack my old mans 95 series prado with a tape measure to see just how high the engine is from the mounts vs the 2.8 and the chassis widths and gearbox lenghts and things like that.
then all i have to do is track down a halfcut Prado 95 series TD
Just get my hands on either a new hilux or a nissan bonnet scoop, and go to town with a cutter to make it intercool

photoshop is your friend!
Took some photos of the 1KZ-TE in the prado and the 3L in the hilux at the same distance, and just from layering, i think the 1KZ-TE will fit without a hassle!!!
The only fun bit may be putting the Turbo radiator in (its twice the size of the 3L's, and seeing where the engine mounts line up, but ive gotta pull all the bashplates off and ive got too much uni work at the moment to do that!
I think i'll end up putting the big air cleaner out of the prado into the truck too- just more air flow to the Turbo, and then i'll work out how to adapt a 3L snorkel to it!
The chassis are nearly identical width, and the engine bay is practically teh same size- the prado just has bigger pannels!
I need to find a halfcut 1KZ-TE intercooled motor now!
