There are some good ones from Jaycar that you don't need to build. Simply wire them in.

"This meter features an LCD display for the clock / stopwatch and battery voltage. There are also three LEDs which show battery condition. It will work on both 12V and 24 volt systems and automatically selects the voltage. The clock can be set to 12 or 24 hour format. The stopwatch can be used for single event timing and lap counting which will time a cars speed over a predetermined distance, and this can be used on more than one car - ie if five cars are in a race, simply press a button to read each cars time. Unit can be wired to dashboard lights - so it is illuminated when parking and headlights are on.
- Supplied with velcro tabs for easy mounting anywhere.
- Small size only 115(W) x 27(H) x 15(D)mm."

There's another one that does temperature rather than a stopwatch, both are under $40.
