Need a Hawse Fairlead
Can anyone tell me where I can get a cheap hawse fairlead to suit steel cable? I've tried ATECO but they were over $100. I'm sure someone (spice?) said that they were buying them from ateco for under $50.
Need it by next weekend.........

If anyone could give me dimensions in the mean time that would be muchly appreciated. I'm building the bar at the moment and will have it finished tomorrow, so it would be good to have it ready to accept the hawse.
I need height, length, thickness and distance between mounting holes.
Thanks guys

The height is 70mm i know this because i measured mine today but its at work. We are buying the last 6 new ones we could find in aus. As far as we could work out they are no longer being made here anywhere in Aus. All 6 are spoken for. But we are going to send one away to be cast up so we should be able to get more within a few months.
a few of the winch challenge guys run them. never really asked them about it but there's a lot less potential for bits to break off. with side pull it's pretty easy to bust the side rollers off - easy fixed with bolts replacing the c clipped pins but adds cost to already spendy bit of kit, a real trap for new players :)
I could be in for one anyway, might look prettier on the 80.

Thanks for the height dimension RUFF. Hypolux told me that the hole setout is the same as a roller version so I can go ahead with the build.
Thanks for everyone's help.
PS. A mate spoke to Ateco on Friday and they gave him a price but didn't say anything about lack of stock. Maybe something has changed?

One problem that could be encounted when galvanised wire rope is pulled over a hawse fairlead (or seized rollers) is Martensitic cracking in the wires.
This was found to occur with mine haulage systems many years ago so they avoid galvanised rope now. The cause was found to be rubbing friction that causes local heating of minute areas of outer wires, which is quickly quenched by the mass of the adjoining wires.

I belive that the Hawse fairleads need to be cast!
Cast is slightly softer and also has self COOLING properties in the steel!
In other words the hawse takes most of the heat from the rope and any wear is also taken by the hawse!
Thanks for everyone's help. Bar is finished! Just need to wire up winch, get a hold of a hawse and sort out a numberplate mount. If I had a digi cam, I'd post a pic, but trust me - it looks good!

For others information...
The billet steel one I got from Cheezy is very cool. I'm very happy with it. It should last a lot longer than a cast one.
However I rang my local ARB in Brisbane on the northside and their retal price for a hawse (from warn) is $86. None in stock at the moment and are a few months away as they come from the states. Their # is 07 3266 3255
