How much movement in the fan clutch is normal??

Post by thomo.in.a.gq »

Quick question.....

I have a TD42 GQ.
When the car is cold, how much should I be able to turn the fan.... It has a fair bit of resistance when it is cold atm. Is this the norm....?

The reason I ask is because the car is running pretty cool, and is lacking a bit of power /economy ( have new injectors / air and fuel filter)

Thanks.

The fan will feel reasonalby "viscous" - this is normal ... it's when you CAN'T turn the fan (fan is locked to hub - or almost locked to hub) that you have problems ...

Better too cool than too warm!

Has the lack of power / economy happend only since you changed filters? Or are you changing filters etc to try and fix your power / economy?

Any other symptoms? Black smoke? No Smoke? Sluggish acceleration? Failure to achieve redline?

What do you call "lacking" in power / economy?

Diesels produce heat when too much fuel is present ... as opposed to petrols which heat up when too little (lean) fuel is present ... so ... really what you're looking for is a culprit that could cause lack of fueling.

Other things that could be causing your problem (esp w/new injectors) is:
- Improper pump advance (very common on TD42 Zexel Rotary Pump)
- Improper pump delivery pressure
- Improper pump delivery volume
If it's worth doing - it's worth doing to excess ...
