look behind the injector pump in the block for the engine number
If it starts with the prefix [ L ] it is a 2.2 litre engine if it is [ 2L ] it is a 2.4 litre engine

6/84 will be an ADR regarding smoke emmission in diesels, nothing to do with date of manufacture.

It looks like an 84 model 2L, the block bolt pattern is the same for all the L series engines, they started life in early 82 as the 2.2 litre L version 1 engine, version 2, L engines have larger exhaust manifold studs and a bigger oil pump, roller rockers, these ran until October 83 then the 2L was released, it can be identified easily by the flat rectangular pad, on top at the rear of the rocker cover, this is where they put the 2LT tag for the turbo variant with 8 bolt crank and bigger conrods.
It stayed much the same until the 2L series 2 (88) which has the cam over valve head, which evolved into the 3L 2.8litre and the 5L 3.0 litre

Well thats a good start. What does it start like when hot and cold and how much and what type of smoke it blows are some more points to look at.

If it's in a Hilux, it's a slow one. :finger:
