look behind the injector pump in the block for the engine number
If it starts with the prefix [ L ] it is a 2.2 litre engine if it is [ 2L ] it is a 2.4 litre engine

what that engine?
It looks like an 84 model 2L, the block bolt pattern is the same for all the L series engines, they started life in early 82 as the 2.2 litre L version 1 engine, version 2, L engines have larger exhaust manifold studs and a bigger oil pump, roller rockers, these ran until October 83 then the 2L was released, it can be identified easily by the flat rectangular pad, on top at the rear of the rocker cover, this is where they put the 2LT tag for the turbo variant with 8 bolt crank and bigger conrods.Gribble wrote:6/84 will be an ADR regarding smoke emmission in diesels, nothing to do with date of manufacture.
It stayed much the same until the 2L series 2 (88) which has the cam over valve head, which evolved into the 3L 2.8litre and the 5L 3.0 litre
