OBA options - what to choose

Post by bludnut »

hey people, i need a bit of advice.
i just got myself a couple of a/c compressors and i dont know which one to use.
first one is an old york style.do they have oil in the bottom in the crank case? or are they lubed by the gas?
its fairly large and will mean moddifying my air intake.
second is a rotary style pump, like most jap cars have, but the wire for the clutch has broken off inside the magnet, can this be fixed or do i get another clutch?no modification needed to fit this one just mountings.

btw which ever one i choose it will be going into a gen 1 paj swb.

any help is much appreciated.

thanx jas

Use the york if you can fit it in. They DO have a sump with oil, and AFAIK they have a higher CFM at lower revs.

thanx ISUZUROVER, yeah i was leaning towards the york, just means having to modify the air intake. it has a small pre-cleaner and the top of the york comp. will be in the way of the flexy hose to the air cleaner.
is the pre-cleaner needed, or worth having?

I assume you mean a filter? The best option is to put a small T in your engine air intake after the filter, and the compressor can suck air from there.

I have a york for OBA and am very happy with it. There have been quite a few threads on here on how to set up OBA systems - do a search for OBA or "air con compressor"

Yorks, especially the 210, make better air compressors.

Higher capacity, and lubed by oil in the sump.

There is a passage between the inlet valve and the front bearing which needs to be plugged.

Remove the clutch (screw in a 5/8 UNC bolt to pull the hub from the cranckshaft).

Clean the area then carefully remove the bearing retainer plate and seal.

Between the seal and the bearing, you will see a small hole that runs up to the inlet valve.

Cover the bearing with a clean piece of oiled cloth, then drill and tap a thread in the hole so it can be plugged with a grub screw - I use M5 screws.

After tapping, carefully remove the rag without getting swarf in the bearing.

Plug the hole and re-assemble the seal, clutch etc.

yeah, ive had a look at some oba threads, very informitive, thanx ben.
the pre-cleaner is the size of a tin of spagetty with a little dust trap under it. it sits on the drivers side iner guard. a flexy hose then goes to the trumpet on the air cleaner.
to fit the york comp. ill have to either find somewere else to mount the pre-cleaner or be done with it completely and throw it over my shoulder;-)
as were the comp. will mount it fouls the flexy hose..
can the york be mounted on a bit of an angle, or does it have to be verticle.?

Go with the York. They are generally all round better than a Sanden provided you have the room to mount it. Kilby have good info on their website and forum
