does that prevent any welding or fabrication of drag links etc, I not keen on messing with steering parts

Straight on, even the taper is the same.

Early crown also has the same spline and centre to centre, but more drop ( needs the taper redrilled)

the tarago spline is the same and bolts straight up to the vitara box

the taper is larger so i got a sleeve machined to bring it down to the sierra size

Whay are you concerned about welding the steering gear ?? the origional suzuki stuff is welded .. I would not wled cast parts but would have no issues whatso ever with welding the "normal" mild steel parts .. So long as it's done properly. I got stuff TIG welded for $15 dollars a piece ..

as long as the pitman arm is sleeved then there is no further modifications required and should all bolt up to your original drag link.

If anyone is interested I can whip up a kit that will mount the vitara box and steering shaft completely bolt on, no welding at all.

you shouldnt be able to fit the box "with no welding at all".

One of the holes line up for the vitara steering box, the other two dont. The chassis should be drilled out and crush tubes welded in the chassis for the other two mounting bolts.

if you are going to use a front locker i would not recommend using the suzuki power steering boxes. They are fine for on road use and if the vehicle hasnt got a locker. The power assist is very weak, as soon as you have a locker you will not turn it.

I would recommend using a landcruiser, hilux or nissan steering box. I run a cruiser box in my zook and i can turn it with one finger with a welded front diff. Matt uses a vitara box in his black zook and is also welded and he has a real hard time trying to turn his.

does the apparent slowness/weakness it come down to pump or box?

there's a local guy that does the p/s conversion with a toy box and vit pump. is the vit pump the limiting factor?

I have seen Andy's (bazooka) setup in person. Trust him when he says it's all bolt-on. I will eventually be getting him to hook me up with one of his kits.

It is the box. I just dont think it has enough power assistance in it once you start to run lockers and bigger tyres. You could try to increase the pump pressure to increase the assistance but i think you will only end up blowing seals.

I am running a vitara pump with my cruiser box and it works ok but i am going to put a bigger pump on it as soon as i get a chance. I think the vitara pump doesnt quite flow enough to keep up with the cruiser box when you try to turn it real fast, turn it slow and it is light as a feather. I have a gq pump i am going to fit to mine.

i believe him when he says it is bolt. What i am saying is that to fit the steering box properly you should drill the chassis and weld in crush tubes.

I agree that if you want pure hard core power steering then you cant go past drilling new holes through your chassis but if all your after is something that will turn those 33's with ease then this way is a lot easier.
At the moment my rig that has the power steer on it is still running stock tyres and I can easily turn the wheel with one finger.
Unfortunately I cannot yet comment on how it handles larger tyres so hopefully skippy will end up putting power steer on his POS with 32's.

I have fitted Vitara PS. I run 31x10.5's. Open front diff. So far no probs.
I made a plate for the outside of the chassis, and welded crush sleeves to the plate, redrilled the chassis to suit, made a Wedge out of steel to realign the gear box straight at the steering column and bolted it all up.
I kept the rag joint and shortened the steering rod to fit. I am SpUA and have kept the Vitara pitman arm, but if the Crown arm is a bolt on I will search for one.
My certification man said he was happy with how it was done.

If you get the angles right a vitara box is sweet. the trick is the mounting, drilling and crush tubes is crap so are the chaep $hit flat adapters, i used a large bit of 20mm plate milled on a taper to correct the vitara mount angle - this also strengthens the chassis in th steer box area(similar to what the IFS conv). bolted the box on using studs and the plate to the car then welded the plate on fully for extra strength. if you copy the angles closely it will turn sooo easily - and i had 5" neg offset 35x14.5 boggers at 2psi and it steered better than my commodore.(just ask BJ he busted his arm on the trail and drove mine 30k with 1 hand thru the bush & i had to wrestle his rig home).the std pump is fine, i have measured the flow rates of both cruiser and vit and the diff is negligable, just use a bigger res. tank for cooling.

All I can say is WOW ...
As I am a backyard boy .. I will make up for lack of engineering skill with brute force :D A Nissan steering box in a Zuk ... how the hell do you fit it in there .. I jast had a look at my GU and its like 4 times the size of my Zuki box .. what about the radiator clearance ???

Mr mad engineer .. where the flow rates tested at pressure ?? (kinda like an air compressor comparo I guess... IE 12litres per min @ 900psi )

I am a bit of a dummy when it comes to hydraulics ..

Yes a wedge milled from twenty mm steel is what I used. But the crush sleeves are required by the certification man. If bolts are to be used through the chassis crush sleeves are a must have.

Well all I can comment on is the vitara box.

The tarago pitman arm has the same drop as the sierra one. The vitara arm has no drop and is basically flat so using the tarago arm you are just bringing the drag link back into line as it originally was.

oooooh .. I like that ... all kinds of room really.. That pitman arm looks to be pretty long compared to the Suzuki one .. Talk about spoiled for choice ..
