worth the cost?

Hi all,
I am new to the forum.
I am looking at picking up a LWB WT Stockman ute from a mate for basically the cost of the wide tyres (which are pretty new).
It is a real fixer-upper, and needs a new head to get the 1.0l engine going, as well as a lot of interior/ panel work.

I am tempted to take the tyres and the great bull-bar and buy another zook, but i think the LWB WT platform is hard to beat. I want it for a second, economical little hunting vehicle.

Is it worth fixing the 1l engine, or should i pay the 2 and a half grand, get the 1.3 and 5 speed gearbox, and do the complete changeover? The 1l engine has only done about 60 thousand k's!

2 grand for a 1.3??? usually can find them for couple hundred bucks, then rebuild them for alot cheaper.

i think he means, get the lwb for 2.5 grand, then pick up an engine from somewhere..

i think that the wt lwb is the best base to start with. but without seeing the vehicle i wouldnt be able to tell you if its worth it.

If the 1L does what u need, keep it in there.

no point modding if you do not need to.

No actually,
I have been told for all the peripherals and everything i would need for the 1.3 (radiator, alternator, etc.) it would cost me $2250 for anyone to get the lot in for me (including 5 speed gearbox)

Is that a bit of a rip-off?

That is a big rip off.

You should get the gear together for under $1000

Mechanical labour if you cant do it yourself will cost you more though

Where would i get the gear for that sort of cost?
A wrecker, just ring around until i find someone who has one in, or what?

P.S. I have no mechanical knowedge, but i have a friend who is an engineer and has two zooks, so is actually Keen to help me play with it.

Search this forum or others.

Zook parts come up all the time for cheap.

Try posting a wanted ad and see how you go.

Wreckers are a last resort for me as they are $$$$

I just looked at the "vehicles for sale" section and i think i could pick up a 'zook for less than it would cost me to play with the one my mate has.
That might be the way to go.

It's amazing how quick you pick up knowledge on here.
I have since bought a 1.3l 5 speed sierra for parts and am going to do the conversion into the 1.0l ute body. The ute doesn't need as much work as i thought, it was just dirty as hell, although i might need to do a little painting. I thought it was old as the hills. Turns out it's a 1996 model!

I have so far decided what to do about sound deadening with stone guard, builder's foil and carpet, bought the appropriate seats and sorted out the tray on the ute. All because of spending hours searching these threads.

One more question i can't work out though, even though have done some searches.

The 1.3l engine i am picking up from Greyzook has a carby that won't start when it's cold unless you pour petrol down it. Will it be cheaper to pick up another one (a corolla carby for example), or put a reco kit through the one that is on there. Can anyone tell me prices for a carby kit or the cost of a replacement one?

Dont bother trying to rebuild it youself they are a PITA to get "right" If you want to rebuild it I would spring the $100 or so and get it done by a professional.. I dont know of anyone that has done a home rebuild on a Zuk carb and been happy with the results.

Ditto on the carb rebuild. a PITA.

4k carb is a good conversion for not many $$. I run one on mine.

we're missing the point with time wasting on the carb.....

more time will be wasted trying to sound deaden!..

just kidding, good choice, stick with the LWB body/chassis and mod from there to suit ya needs.

Maybe if you're going to the trouble to put the 1.3 engine in, you could also fit efi... Just a thought.
