Engine squealing on start up

Post by FEAROZA »

wtf is this all about?

Ever since I had my timing and drive belts changed I have had htis excruciating screeching on startup, and at revs for about 20 seconds. After that its OK. but its getting worse. I'm going to take it back to the blokes who changed em for me in the first place but was wondering what you thought.

I have heard it on other cars so think its not too uncommon a problem.

cheers

Funnily, thats another thing my car started to do after dunking it in mud... just tightened the belts a bit and it went away.

It's bloody loud whe you start the car to go to work at 0400 on a sunday morning!

Don't mess around with a sliping Timeing belt I just aquired another rocky for Parts. Timeing belt sliped then broke and took the engine down with it. Great for me I got lots of parts for $200 Bad for the Guy I got it from.

More than likely it's your powersteering, Aircon belt. Adjust it a bit but don't overdo it. :finger: :finger:

Yes- alternator, waterpump, power steering, or aircon pulley slipping. The timing belt is a toothed belt so it would have to be very loose to slip.

If the noise is just at startup for a couple of seconds it can also be the clutch pack in the starter motor. Mine started squealing and carrying on after my last water crossing.

It sounds like your alternater belt just needs adjusting to me. its pretty easy to do with a couple of spanners. Don't worry about your timing belt slipping. If this slips it means bent valves and a wrecked motor so unless it won't run at all don't worry. :)

My starter motor has been squeling after the engine fires for years, I had it repaired and after a few months it's doing it again. Never given a problem or never failed to start. Ah well it's a manual and you can push em if you have to. :D

Leon, if you get motivated to pull the starter out again try liberally soaking the clutch (on the cog that engages the ring gear) with silicone spray. I did that to mine about four months ago and it hasn't made a noise since. :D

All sorts of gunk came out of it when I did this! Also clean up the throwout mechanism and lubricate that with silicone too.

(Sorry if my attempt at technical starter motor terminology leaves a bit to be desired! )
