Hilux 2.8 Turbo
I picked up a 96 dual cab last week with only 130000ks and are looking to turbo it. Anyone have any feedback on the various bolt on systems eg. DTS, Safari etc. Also is there any difference between watercooled and oil cooled? Is a boost compensater required? most bolt on systems dont mention one.

and were ca u get all this
a toyota Surf. rack all the turbo gear u can find off of it and 90% of it will swap over
this u can do for about $500 700
or go out and waste $3g on a over priced turbo kit like a safari and so on

I had a schwitzer on mine ran well. But like stated easierst way a CT20 off a surf.
Dont run over 12psi max (ran mine on 10psi was good enough for me) or else you will be rebuilding your bottom end. Oil cooled is fine for your diesel, plus less to hook up. Also invest in a turbo timer, saves sitting in the car for 3mins after you arrive at your destination.

I have a DTS on my 2.8 and have had it for about 5 years and have not have a problem with it.
The DTS kit uses an oil and water cooled mitsubishi heavy industries TD04 turbo, i believe this to be better as the bearings in the turbo remain at a more constant temperature giving the turbo a longer life. Under normal driving conditions you dont need a turbo timer as a water cooled turbo however if you are giving the car a flogging just before you stop you should let it cool down before you turn it off.
I also have had a compensator installed and it made the world of difference, you wont get the full benifit of having a turbo without it, you will also get better fuel economy as the pump wont over fuel at low boost and give the correct amount of fuel at higher boost.
Just my experience and opinion.

LN106 d/cab, 2in lift, 32s, airlocker,
ct 20's are good if your gonna have big tyers on your truck cos they give u heaps down low when your taking off and they are the best sounding turbo goin round... one of my mates has a ct20 and another has a safari with a custom garret core, cost him a packet. The ct20 goes heaps better off the line untill about 70 where the safari revs out better. If it was up to me and they were the same price i would go the ct20 any day, but then again if your doing alot of highway driving the safari would be a better choice because its not running flat out the whole time when your cruisin on 100.
If u want a really good turbo that peforms in the way the safari dose but better i would look at getting a AXT turbo, u would easly be able to rev out to 4500rpm with one of them

gq wagon now a gq ute, straight gas tb42 with a thing on the side that makes it go fast

it all depends on our much fuel your pushing in and how you drive it. good drivers will lift their foot as the boost drops, however most drivers won't.
if your running big fuel then a compensater stops that cop attention getting of a smoke screen. with minor fuel increase you can get away without it.
