Hey All
After a lot consideration I’ve decided to go with a solid axle single/dual cab Hilux or a 4Runner for my 1st 4x4 (due to the fact that I’m a 1st year uni student and I need something that has decent fuel economy... and is also quite capable offroad
). However, I cannot get a definite answer as to what year they went IFS
. From what I can gather from searching through this site and on google.
- 4Runners went IFS from 86 onwards in Aus.
- Extra cab Hilux’s went IFS from 86 onwards in Aus.
- 3L diesels are all IFS???
- 2.4L petrol’s are all Solid Axle???
- All Hilux’s went IFS from 97 onwards in Aus.
- All Hilux’s and 4Runners went IFS from 86 onwards in the USA.
It would be awesome if someone could clear this up for me.
BTW, I have 9k to spend at the moment and will be saving for mods later. Any info/ideas would be appreciated
Alex

All Hilux's that are SR5 models had IFS. This includes the 1st Gen 4runners.
All 2nd Gen 4Runners have IFS, and the base model Lux went to IFS late '96 or there abouts.

As far as I know, false. Only SR5 models were IFS regardless of engine. Once the 2nd Gen 4Runner came out around 89 though 99% of them are 90-95 models, these were all IFS. But the lux's remained live axle apart from the SR5.
- All Hilux’s went IFS from 97 onwards in Aus.
True.

Hey go for the ln106. I own one and few mates have them one mate has a ifs lux 99 mate have 2 tow him everywhere. Once u lift wheel ur stuffed without lockers and the ifs don't have much flex at all so that happens plenty . Picked mine up for 10G plenty of mods already done plus set of 5 35" pedes

I have an IFS 89 petrol 4runner picked up for 2000. It came with 15X8 rims also couldnt beat the price. But if I had found a diesel with a solid front end i would have jumped on it strait away. In my eyes you cant beat a diesel for economy and the higher tourque down low makes them harder to spin the wheels. The only problem is if you blow a head or stuff the injector pump they start to cost. But to your main question go a solid front end all the way there cheaper and eaiser to work on. And have fun spending 9 grand you should get a good rig for that price cause if I spent 7 grand on mine she would be shit hot
