hey all,
i am a new member of this forum and discovered it from the 4wd tv website. I own a 1977 2f petrol FJ40 and am about to embark on doing the thing up. my rig is currently a 4 speed and i want to convert it to a 5 speed, which would dramatically improve it. I have been trying to find places in qld which would do such a conversion and no one has steped up. so i am going to do it myself. What i do know is that the best fit would be from a 1983-84 5 speed FJ40 cruiser but those gearboxes are hard to come by so if anyone knows anyone or anything that can help me out with finding these parts or knows anything about this type of conversions and what i should do could you please email me. cheers
Jared

There's a thread about this still going - check it out. I've got (well just put V8 in so not anymore) had a 2H 4 spd and bolted a 5spd from an 88ish 60 series up to it - no worries - using same clutch and bell housing.

I 5 speeded my 2F 40 series many moons ago coz I believed it would be good for economy and drivability. At the time I had 33 inch tyres and the conv cost me for box & T/Case aprox $2500. I would have been better off spending $1000 on some 35inch rubber which would have made thye gearing better & the other $1500 on a locker or a winch.
Ah.........aint hindsight a good thing????
Anyway you may be better off going this way too.

I agree with the above if your looking for economy, but just fitting larger rubber will increase your speed down hill in first low when using the engine braking, also rob's you of acceleration too. Where as changing the gear box will not. All depends on the end result you wish to achive when robbing Peter to pay PaulMYTTUF wrote:I 5 speeded my 2F 40 series many moons ago coz I believed it would be good for economy and drivability. I paid Peter and Paul, Fitted 35's, Changed the diff ratio's to 4.556 and fitted a 5 speed. I did the diffs to compensate for the tyres and the gearbox to compensate for the diffs. The tyres I did, well you all know why we do the tyres
Depends all on your budget.
