Most speedway cars have been running em for years and are compolusory in most classes these days. The release mechinisim is simple... a pin and hole setup one end and usually a seatbelt latch the other this way they are simple to release in an emergency. A well designed one can be completley removed from the car in seconds by either the operators or emergency personal. Some of the drivers in the V8 Supercar class is just starting to fit them ...
There are also various different widths of the web material, select a fine one and the visibility restriction will be minimum
Got to ask ya self ...... is a crushed skull better than poor visibility ?

It keeps your arms etc inside the vehicle in the event of a rollover.. Saves you crushing them..

yer prolly right N*A*M,
When I was racing bikes seriously back in the 80's I had a bad prang, the weeks in plaster and on crutches would have been undoubtbly longer if the quality of my leathers had of been standard, my race set were worth $1000 compared to a std set for road use that cost about $400. The doctors said right from the word go "the skin grafts I would of had to have would have left me in hossy for months."
My father also raced bikes (he won the aussie 500cc GP back in the 50's) and I still get a chill every time I look at his pics.....leather skullcaps .. NO WAY !, he also had a bad fall that ended his career too and again it was the quality of his gear that saved months of hospitalisation.

It wasnt that long ago we were forced to wear seatbelts in cars, that saves thousands every year, we now have airbags fitted and countless more lives are saved.... Whilst 99% of offroaders would never need a window net, I would think that the 1% of the "hard core" drivers that fit them have alot more piece of mind.

I know they are different sports to draw examples from but anything and I mean ANYTHING that improves your chances of survival and or recovery from an accident is worth the inconveinance.

edit: My rig isnt fitted with one......yet if I was to do a "winch challenge" event.....it WOULD be the first thing I would fit, the second would be a full harness and the 3rd a high quallity stackhat...... then the 4x4 prep work would start.... the rig might not make it home in one piece but atleast I wll.

okay i see the point about arms and the insurance now. don't get me wrong, i'm all for safety and i'm slowing getting the equipment for my rig. i also had a bike accident a few years back. it was just on the street but it involved a tarago. i walked away from it and now i've got a fourby.

but i think for offroad, window nets would be a pain. i don't see a problem with just running standard doors and automotive glass. with the window wound up, i think the glass actually adds a lot of stiffness and strength to the a-pillar. i'm saying this not based on any technical evidence but from what i saw when i flipped my car 2 years ago. nets don't give any strength and if it's set up poorly, would probably hinder your egress from a car wreck.

adrian runs half doors so the opening is huge. he did it for extra visibility and now he's thinking of running nets. i would just go back to standard doors.

Next year there are a lot of changes being introduced to the comp scene - compulsory window nets are one of them. No net - no start. These are to be fitted irrespective of door/window configuration.

It would be a pain to reverse with nets as i usually hang out the window to see where my fat ass Cruiser is going. :P

I like the sound of that Prawn trawler netting, still have good visability.

The ASCC rules idicates you need a window net to run, does anyone know if it has to comform to any standards ?

Has anyone seen the orange guard rail stuff they put aound holes in the ground? The council may have some used bunches of that come up in auctions and so forth maybe you could look for it like that through auctions or something?

I saw a few drunk guys staggering home at 3am with reels of it once. I would not condone stealing it as that is against the law. But it mst be available for sale somewhere. Possible a safety company or something.

I know a guy with some he might sell to you  :finger: (just kidding, ROFL)

What comps require netting?

Why would you want to use that sh*t for BJ? You wouldn't be able to see squat if you had that stuff plastered on your window. :?

Any person who is contemplating entering a competition might want to do some research as to the relevant standards regarding the changes in the rules regarding safety. You'd hate to find out at scrutineering, wouldn't you?

Window nets would have to comply to a standard - materials, mounting system, void size (how big the holes are - whats the point if your head can fit through?) Most competition organisers won't take any chances on insurance...

We'll be selling window netting real soon. Just finding out all the pro's and cons of the different manufacturers now.
Dont think it works?dont want to use it? thats up to you. Event organises, scutineers, sanctioning bodies and insurance companies are all pushing for a higher level aof safety as drvers and vehicles get more capable. This'll mean real helmets, netting, roll over protection and less dodgy mods.

N.A.M i totally agree with you that it restricts vision, However if i want to continue Playing at XRCC and the likes then the rules state that it is a requirement!

I also want to get it sooner than later as i would like to drive with it occassionally so i can get use to it!

Like i said earlier, if it means its safer and if insurance Companies think its safer, and if it meens we can continue to run OUTLAW then i am all for it!

I also don't see the point of using anything but the proper stuff!

I have been informed that for about $60.00 you can get a fully custom made one! (thanks Humps)
