GQ gearbox ????

Post by thomo.in.a.gq »

Howdy,
Need some advice on my gearbox in the GQ. (TD42)

The 5th gear syncro is grinding when going into gear.
However this is only after the car has been driven for 1/2 an hour or more (ie when the oil heats up and thins out a bit). I have put the redline MT90 into it and it is still the same. ($130 down the drain )

When its cold there is no dramas getting it into gear at all.

Can anyone suggest an oil which will help my cause as i can't afford a rebuild just yet??

no oil may fix it, and if you cant afford a rebuild, maybe a new set of shoes, and a public transport pass, untill you get enough $ together to fix the end float in the shafts.

5th seems to be the first to show signs of an unhappy box.

If you are looking for an oil to fix the problem then you might be disappointed. Most of the higher end oils use good ep additives that take a fair while to start working so if redline is better you may not notice until a thousand or so km.

If you want a hand to spend some more of your money ;) .

Here is a ducks nuts oil that uses a totally different additive to what is usually available of the shelf. This oil is streaks ahead of almost all out there IMO (because of the additve) and will virtually halt wear compared to other oils BUT it hates, hates, hates water so if you run that risk don't even consider it.

It's Castrol Dello ESI gear lubricant 80-90.

If the 20L drum doesn't say almost exactly what I wrote it is just a normal oil, oil sellers very often have no clue. Oh yeah about $200 for a drum

cheers fnq

my 5th gear synchro is knackered too.(GQ TB42e) dble clutch and she engages beautifully. less than $100 for synchro ring from nissan.

i pulled the extension off the back of gearbox hoping to replace synchro on car. unfortunately you've got to remove entire 5th gear assembly from back of box to remove selector fork to access 5th gear synchro.

i could see it, i could touch it, i could smell it......but i didn't feel confident to f**k with it, so now i dble clutch until i gain some confidence and do more research into pulling the bugger out.

good thing is gearbox doesn't need to be removed, so no rooting around aligning clutch spigot, etc.

any mechanics out there willing to quote 5th gear synchro fix on car complete or gearbox supplied?

I have heard of another bloke using mobilfluid 424. It's a tractor gearbox oil and is very thick. Anybody else heard of or tried this.....
