power steering q

Post by GQ Bear »

my power steering gets real heavy when at idle and low revs only. if i rev engine power steering resumes. what could cause this? it's very annoying

driving at normal speeds= normal power steering

idle or low revs= no power steering-> clutch in and rev= power steering-> revs decrease= no power steering

all belts are tight, p/s belt is overly tight if anything

thanks glenn :? :?

sounds like the seals in the steering box or your pump are gone. has your steering box got any noticeable leaks on or around it.

steering box was leaking like a seive, had it reo'd and all seals replaced. no leaks now. re-fitted box and replaced fluid about 12mths/5-10k kms ago

maybe it was shit fluid or something, 'twas dexron II or wotever is specified for these things.

When box was leaking i used to put heaps of that stuff thats sposed to fix worn gears, etc. - can't remember what its called, white bottle with red writing on it. Maybe i'll try some of that again- or maybe that sh*t f*cked the pump

Pump might have worn vanes or pressure relief valve sticking. Some Nissan cars--Skylines i think, use the same type of power steering pump, but with remote resevoir.

Pulsars too.

Bear, if you're thinking about a V8 in the future still, best to do what Woop suggested as you'll need to get a remote reservoir anyway most probably to fit a pump on.
