OK this is weird. I was just looking for this thread to add something and it disapeared and now it has come back but further down the screen and with less posts. SPOOKY (mods)
Anyway Ian paltridge used this rope at OBC and it seemed to work a treat. It seems to be made slightly differently to normal plasma type rope and doesn't seem to be as suseptable to fraying.

good to see giantracing,
now im curious as to whether the rope comes spliced and lugged and opposite ends or this is simply the rope only???
any hooks/thimbles/protectors available???
and postage???
thanks and sorry for the questions, just really interested, and if there is a big order for a lot of say 10mm at a time does this mean the price will actually be cheaper???

From his original post he is going to buy it by the roll which usually comes in 100M which means that it is by the length only and not spliced or with accessories

Cheaper? Maybe. Better? Probably not, giantracing doesn't buy crap normally

yeh thats it,
ill just have to weight up what your actually getting with some of the others, compared to giantracing, i never doubted the product would be good
just shopping round, but at the end of the day, if it saves a life, how much is it worth right?
and if this comes in free lengths, then who is best to safely splice the rope??? local boating/yachting places, i dont really trust myself to splice it to a professional level
and wheres the best place to buy the hardware then, namely the hook???

It's really easy to splice. You don't splice it like normal rope. You don't need metal loops or anything. You can buy the hook at any marine winch or crane winch outlet (for the bigger style hooks) Otherwise most 4by shops can supply hooks for you. To splice it you just thread it through the hook and loop it back on itself with about 30cm looped back. Thread the loose end straight through the other side of the rope from one side to the other about 3-5cm from the hook. Repeat this back in the other direction about another 3-5cm. Do this 3-4 times in total and then thread the left over loose end down the center of the rope so there is no loose rope sticking out and pull tight. This will cause the rope to pull tight on itself under load and won't pull out. Roger smith did this to lift his rangie off the ground with a crane to prove its strength. It was only a rangie though

yeh your right toughnut, your doing all giantracings hard work,
sorry for all the questions, just really want to buy rope now, but want to get it right also
i can just use a shackle instead of a hook yeh??? or use the hook off my wire cable???
iv only got a shortie paj, with a 8000 pound winch, will 8mm suffice for that? its about 6.7 breaking load isnt it??? if i can afford it should i go 10mm just for the sake of it or not???
is there a more detailed (read: diagrams) version of the splice around???

Re: rope
I'm really crap with drawing diagrams on paint. You can use what ever you want through the end loop. I used 8mm plasma on my truck before I started competing and it worked fine. If you are going to use it a lot I'd go up to at least 10mm. If you are going to compete then go 12mm. This just allows for the fraying you get from using it heaps and not having the time to properly protect the rope on rocks etc.klrevo wrote:yeh your right roughnut, your doing all giantracings hard work,

rope
its just to be used on a normal day to day fourby, wkend trips and the like, never comp work, and probably like once a month for 5-10mins, im thinking 8mm will do the job nicely
something like this seems a bit too involved,

Copy step 2 on the second page but with the actual rope 3-4 times and then just bury the thread like step 3 on the first pageklrevo wrote:its just to be used on a normal day to day fourby, wkend trips and the like, never comp work, and probably like once a month for 5-10mins, im thinking 8mm will do the job nicely

You can buy a thimble or tape a pen to the end and use that to push through. Be careful to properly separate the threads when you do thisOISTA wrote:How would you attach the lug to the trailing end??

10mm 15900 kg brake strain
12mm 19000 kg brake strain
i wil be using 12mm in the 8 day in the next couple of weeks...

those are MASSIVE breaking strains, though a lot of breaking strains are rated at the splice, but the norm for 8mm is usually about 6,700kg and 10mm around 10,000, so if these are correct thats awesome
and after reading the splicing technique looks easy as, even i could do it
ill be in contact very soon chris
thanks for all, especially toughnut

ok rhett.
just to make sure every one understands, i am ordering a 1000m roll from overseas. i must sell the hole roll up front before anyone gets any. so that means the faster we sell the roll the faster we will have it........
sorry for doing it like this but i am not a rich man......
so lets sell it all people as fast as we can......................................
10mm will be first to fill i think, then 12mm but i can bring a small amount of 12 in for now or 1000metres. so i hope we all understand
thank you
